Book Description
In 1996 Decker was one of the first of a small group of scholars allowed access. Originally published as Die Papste und die Hexen, Witchcraft and the Papacy is based on these newly available materials and traces the role of the papacy in witchcraft prosecutions from medieval times to the eighteenth century. Decker found that although the medieval church did lay the foundation for witch hunts of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the postmedieval papacy, and the Roman and Spanish Inquisitions, played the same kind of skeptical, restraining role during the height of the witch-hunting frenzy in Germany and elsewhere in Europe as it had in the trial that was the initial focus of his research.

Book Description
Winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Literature, Dario Fo's name is synonymous with anarchic political comedy. His best known plays in English include Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Can't Pay, Won't Pay and Trumpets and Raspberries. But for over thirty years Fo, often in collaboration with his wife, Franca Rame, has led the field in political satire in Europe: capitalism, imperialism and corruption in the Italian government being the main targets for his ideologically inspired attack. For performance outside Italy, his comedies are frequently adapted to reflect local political conditions. Drawing on all forms of popular theatre, Fo's reputation as a skilled actor, mime, and director equals that of his writing. Abducting Diana (Il ratto della Francesca) is also published by Oberon Books. Copyright © Libri GmbH. All rights reserved.

Book Description
Witchcraft is rarely mentioned in official documents of the contemporary Roman Catholic church, but ideas about the dangers of witchcraft and other forms of occultism underpin the recent revival of interest in exorcism in the church. This Element examines hierarchical and clerical understandings of witchcraft within the contemporary Roman Catholic church. The Element considers the difficulties faced by clergy in parts of the developing world, where belief in witchcraft is so dominant it has the potential to undermine the church's doctrine and authority. The Element also considers the revival of interest in witchcraft and cursing among Catholic demonologists and exorcists in the developed world. The Element explores whether it is possible for a global church to adopt any kind of coherent approach to a phenomenon appraised so differently across different cultures that the church's responses to witchcraft in one context are likely to seem irrelevant in another.

Book Description
It is acknowledged Church doctrine that sorcery is the specific domain of the Devil. Yet occult tales are liberally sprinkled throughout the Old and New Testaments, from the spirit-invoking Witch of Endor to the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Throughout its 2,000 year history, the Church has spawned numerous mystical religious orders, like the Knights Templar, that may have been engaged in supernatural pursuits, while no fewer than three popes were believed to be involved in occult practices. Christian scriptures tell us that the occult is real, while Catholic priests are thought to have spiritual power over ghosts and evil entities. But if a priest can cast out demons during the rites of exorcism, does it not imply he has the ability to summon them as well? In this eye-opening, provocative work, leading occult scholar Simon examines the Church's unspoken relationship with forbidden magic by exploring the infamous seventeenth-century document considered by some to be the most demonic of all occult texts—the Grimoire of Pope Honorius III—and illuminates the Vatican's darkest hidden corners.

Excerpt: ...illum morte condemnet, sicut condemnat iudex sibi traditum ob crimen haeresis, ged debet ilium reum volentem puro corde et non ficto redire ad gremium ecclesiae admittere ad reconciliationem, beneflcio absoluclonis ab excommunicatione sibi impenso, abiurata primitus haeresi." "According to Hansen, this title is the Spanish translation of the old Latin title. Hansen, Quellen, 324. "El tal christiano es apostat y traydor contra la yglesia catholica." men, because of their strong imaginations, and because they are easily deluded. Because witches commit such crimes by means of their magic, they should be sought out and punished for them. "These wicked people, whether men or women, who use this diabolical art, should be punished as heretics. But if besides these matters which regard faith, they commit other crimes, on account of which they can be condemned without the sentence of an ecclesiastical judge, the secular power alone can take them into custody and punish them with capital punishment. For, as we said above, they kill children at night, or they cause illness and weak health and commit other similar crimes which deserve the penalty of death even though there is no evidence of unbelief or apostasy."22 A third Spanish writer was the Dominican Francis de Victoria, professor of theology at Salamanca, who discusses the question of magic arts in one part of his work, Relectiones 12 theologicae, 1540. He gives credit to the stories of the ancient witches, Circe, Hecate, etc., and says that not all the deeds of magicians are false, this is proved from the Scriptures.221 Of the reality of witchflight he has no doubt, "daemones et magi virtute daemonum possunt movere et transferre corpora de loco ad...
