The knowledge and experimental development of boundary layer turbulent flows is extremely important in applications related to the building aerodynamics, wind comfort, atmospheric dispersion, and even aeronautics. The Aerodynamic Laboratories of the UFRGS and UNNE have been making joint activities related to wind engineering such as those mentioned earlier for more than 25 years. In this work, a compilation of different experiments on turbulent boundary layer flows realized in these both laboratories is carried out. The characteristics of flows that develop on a smooth surface of the wind tunnel are experimentally evaluated. Then, reduced-scale models of atmospheric boundary layer flows are analyzed including the effects of turbulence generators and surface roughness. Special attention on the behavior of the turbulent parameters in the case of experimental studies using low mean velocity is paid. Finally, some comments referring to recent studies on thermal effects in turbulent boundary layer flows and the development of reduced-scale models of convective flows are included.

Iowa State University researchers are in the process of developing a new wind tunnel. This tunnel will be able to perform a wide range of tests. It will not only be used in an aerodynamic (Aero) test section configuration, but also in an atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) type configuration. It will be able to create a model of the turbulent boundary layer that all structures in the atmosphere are submersed in. The tunnel is designed to utilize both closed return as well as open return tunnel configurations. This will enable the tunnel to reap the benefits of both types of tunnels. Currently most of the ABL studies rely on the assumption that atmospheric velocity variations are adequately modeled by stationary mean and turbulent flow properties. The ISU Aero/ABL tunnel will be able to develop non-stationary flows to help better study and understand this type of phenomena. The primary concern and area of research reported here has been to develop this non-stationary flow device by modeling and testing the design. The results shown reflect that a 107% gust can be achieved by the model, but with some changes to the design, a higher magnitude gust can be achieved.

"The importance of simulating atmospheric flows in wind tunnels has been well established. Experiments were conducted in the Modified Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel to determine the suitability of this wind tunnel for simulating atmospheric flows and the degree to which various aspects of modeling could be fulfilled. A temperature profile to simulate the inversion aloft was generated inside the test section, and then an appropriate velocity profile was built in by means of screen mesh arrangements. The turbulence characteristics of the flow were measured. The validity of the temperature, velocity and turbulence fields were examined. It was found that while the temperature and velocity profiles were quite valid, the turbulence generated by the screen mesh arrangement was too high. The test section being short, turbulence could not be damped out to the required level. A model smoke stack was introduced into the test section to observe the effect of the modeled inversion on the plume. The smoke velocity could not be effectively controlled, and the plume could only be observed a very short distance downstream. Therefore, the plume path was not very realistic. Other smoke tests in the test section showed maximum turbulence at the surface and no significant change when the temperature profile was introduced"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Many of the conditions commonly assumed for studies of the atmospheric boundary layer can be reproduced in a low-speed wind tunnel. Valid criteria are needed to determine similarity of flows obtained in wind tunnel experiments and natural flows. Reasonably good general indications are available from comparison of normalized velocity profiles from wind tunnel and field observations. In this paper, a dimensionless modeling parameter, K, is examined. This is a point parameter which is a function of both the local mean velocity and local turbulent shear stress. Preliminary results indicate that K has merit as a modeling parameter for the limited class of flows discussed. (Author).
