It talks about a coming global economic downturn. The book cover shows is an illustration of the extraordinary times. There is the earth in the cover picture. It represents all the nations of the world, which will be ravaged by the severe economic downturn. A 3-year-old boy standing without his parents illustrates the fact that his parents were infected and died in the pandemic. He is all alone by himself. All industries are badly hit and the business of the rich suffers. They can only cast a blank stare upon the clouds, hoping that they will be blinded by the clouds. They are only concerned about themselves and their business. They are not in the mood to care for others, the outsiders and the miserable children of others. The many vague high-rise buildings in the picture represent a bleak prospect. Some businesses are closed down, including big hotels, old signature restaurants, famous western restaurants and some factories. Big and small companies retrench staff, and riots are frequent. Churches are closed and only a few members continue to give offerings. Many pastors live by faith with their families. In Chinese, the word ‘您' (‘心 ‘ (heart) under ‘你 ‘ (you) ) is a polite way to address the elderly. They have some savings, gold chains, valuables or property. They work hard but they care about their families and children. They bring their valuables to the pawnshop. Many local middle-aged and migrant workers have lost their jobs. They are in a panic about the future. The young people are jobless but they glue to their mobile phones. They don’t have strong bonding with their family.

Shoptimism
Author: Lee Eisenberg
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439160619
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 596
Book Description
In this smart, engaging book, Lee Eisenberg, best-selling author of The Number: A Completely Different Way to Think about the Rest of Your Life, leads us on a provocative and entertaining tour of America's love/hate affair with shopping, a pursuit that, even in hard times, remains a true national pastime. Why do we shop and buy the way we do? In a work that will explain much about the American character, Eisenberg chronicles the dynamics of selling and buying from almost every angle. Neither a cheerleader for consumption nor an anti-consumerist scold, he explores with boundless curiosity the vast machinery aimed at inducing us to purchase everything from hair mousse to a little black dress. He leads us, with understated humor, into the broad universe of marketing, retailing, advertising, and consumer and scientific research--an arsenal of powerful forces that combine to form what he calls "The Sell Side." Through the rest of the book, Eisenberg leads us through the "Buy Side" -- a journey directly into our own hearts and minds, asking among other questions: What are we really looking for when we buy? Why are we alternately excited, guilt-ridden, satisfied, disappointed, and recklessly impulsive? What are our biases, need for status, impulses to self-express, that lead us individually to buy what we buy? Are you a classic buyer (your head wants to do the right thing), or a romantic buyer (your heart just wants to have fun)? How do men and women differ in their attitudes towards shopping, and does the old cliche -- "Women shop, men buy" -- apply any longer? Of special interest are the author's findings on the subject of What Makes a Good Buy? We all purchase things that we sooner or later regret, but what are the guidelines for making purchases that we'll never regret? What, for instance, defines the perfect gift? Brimming with wit and surprise, Shoptimism will be delightful and instructive reading for anyone with a credit card and a healthy curiosity about American culture, through good times and bad. For here, in one vivid journey, is a memorable, panoramic portrait of our everyday self-delusions, desires, and dreams.

The effect of the economic downturn on the people in the West Midlands
Author: Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: West Midlands Regional Committee
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 9780215543424
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 140
Book Description
This report is the Committee's second inquiry in the effect of the economic downturn on the people of the region. The Committee's terms of reference are: what problems exist and how their effect can be minimised in advance of an economic upturn; how effectively Government agencies and other regional bodies are addressing these problems; and what advice and assistance people need to help them live more sustainable lifestyles in the future. The Committee was particularly interested in the level of indebtedness and home repossessions; availability of appropriate training; the adequacy of assistance and social cohesion. The Committee is concerned that some of those areas most in need of additional Government assistance may not be aware of new funding available and do not have the capacity to bid for it. They understand that the Taskforce should not be seen as the answer to every problem in the region and that it was set up to focus on the initial economic impact of the downturn. However the Taskforce has reach within the region and uninhibited connection to Whitehall. It is also recognised that the region's third sector has not been as fully engaged as they had hoped.

The Crisis of Our Time
Author: John Carvalho
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1496926161
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 375
Book Description
Dr. John Carvalho, former Harvard academician and winner of the United States National Research Service Award, is no stranger to the word crisis. As a scientist, scholar and statesman he has spent decades working on the front lines of biomedical and theoretical exploration, global health, and the worldwide, human rights movement. The Crisis of Our Time is the astonishing, partial memoir and discourse regarding his lifes career and philosophy concerning the planets most pressing problems. Written in a way accessible to everyone, Carvalho, beginning with his passionate, poetic, and provocative first chapter, challenges us to discover that the disastrous, external crises of our lives emanate from the unity of our conscious and subconscious experiences. Indeed, the great troubles afflicting humanitywar, infectious disease, economic recession, terrorism, family discord, psychological trauma, human rights violationsdilemmas that appear unsolvable, actually originate whenwithout truthful self-reflectionwe glorify mediocrity rather than strive to excel. Employing cutting-edge, scientific information; keen, historical insight; extensive, cultural experience; and profound, philosophical analysis; Carvalho dissects our crises to elucidate why they perpetuate. In so doing, he introduces his theory of causal circular systems to reveal how causes feed off and exacerbate effects, which, in turn, reinforce those same causes. Furthering his views, he explores global health, the example par excellence, as well as economics, political history, planetary climate change, and the most central crisis of allBeing or Nothingnessthe fears of the Selfthe dread of our mortality. Ultimately, this short but eye-opening book creates epic meaning while using an artistic, literary style that is virtually unseen in nonfiction. Anyone who genuinely seeks excellence over mediocrity, truth over falsity, meaning over purposelessness, and resolution over despair should read Crisis.
