Book Description
Remember when life was so much simpler.... I loved to listen to stories of how my parents and grandparents grew up and what life was like in their times. I enjoyed this so much that I decided to tell the story of my childhood, a time when life was simpler and less pressured, when families were closer and spent more time together, when people were less materialistic, when kids could play outside alone and families could leave their doors open without concern. A time when neighbors took care of each other's kids without being asked or being paid and sports stars and movie stars plied their trade for love of what they did, not how much they got paid and when a boy's life revolved around "egg creams and baseball teams." I know that we can only keep the past alive in our memories, our hearts and in our stories but as we share these stories not only with each other but also with the youth of today, we have the hope that sharing these stories with those who will have the power to shape the future will convince them to keep some of the more positive elements of the past alive in their own ways. So sit back, kick your feet up, treat yourself to a big glass of ice cold milk with a freshly baked black and white cookie, a creamy charlotte rouge or a gooey chocolate clair and allow your mind to wander back to those "good old days" as you read my story.

All Eyes are Upon Us
Author: Jason Sokol
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 0465056717
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 339
Book Description
The Northeastern United States -- home to abolitionism and a refuge for blacks fleeing the Jim Crow South -- has had a long and celebrated history of racial equality and political liberalism. After World War II, the region appeared poised to continue this legacy, electing black politicians and rallying behind black athletes and cultural leaders. However, as historian Jason Sokol reveals in All Eyes Are Upon Us, these achievements obscured the harsh reality of a region riven by segregation and deep-seated racism. White fans from across Brooklyn -- Irish, Jewish, and Italian -- came out to support Jackie Robinson when he broke baseball's color barrier with the Dodgers in 1947, even as the city's blacks were shunted into segregated neighborhoods. The African-American politician Ed Brooke won a senate seat in Massachusetts in 1966, when the state was 97% white, yet his political career was undone by the resistance to busing in Boston. Across the Northeast over the last half-century, blacks have encountered housing and employment discrimination as well as racial violence. But the gap between the northern ideal and the region's segregated reality left small but meaningful room for racial progress. Forced to reckon with the disparity between their racial practices and their racial preaching, blacks and whites forged interracial coalitions and demanded that the region live up to its promise of equal opportunity. A revelatory account of the tumultuous modern history of race and politics in the Northeast, All Eyes Are Upon Us presents the Northeast as a microcosm of America as a whole: outwardly democratic, inwardly conflicted, but always striving to live up to its highest ideals.

Ball of Lies
Author: James Dayboch
Publisher: Page Publishing Inc
ISBN: 166242583X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 333
Book Description
Why would respected and famous Americans risk their reputations to create a web of deceit to fabricate, promote, and defend the myth that Abner Doubleday invented baseball in Cooperstown, New York? Further, if not Doubleday, then who did invent baseball? Contrary to what many people still believe, the Doubleday myth is completely false. Based on a true story, this book describes the circumstances leading up to the creation of the myth by influential figures and the efforts of a librarian to expose the truth. Although major league baseball serves as a portion of the backdrop, this incredible story has little to do with understanding how to play the game. Rather, it reports on the inconsistencies inherent within the American psyche. People associated with this tale include nationally prominent politicians, previous major figures from baseball and other sport, royalty from abroad, leaders of industry, and other historical figures of note, such as Thomas Edison, Mark Twain, and Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky. Whether you’re a history buff, sports fan, bibliophile, student of business strategy, or enjoy reading some fun stories from international destinations and any of several places across America, ranging in size from Cedar Rapids to St. Paul to Washington DC, Chicago, and New York City, this book is for you. In novel form, the telling of the story places circumstances and related events into a striking historical perspective, where much of what is contained herein appears in print for the first time. Being a knowledgeable sports fan won’t help you here, and the reader who thinks Americans, in general, are philosophically superior to people of other nations in all ways may wish to reconsider that perspective. As to the importance and prevalence of truth—that question is left for the reader to determine. This book only addresses the mystery associated with the Ball of Lies.

The City in American Cinema
Author: Johan Andersson
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350115622
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 423
Book Description
How has American cinema engaged with the rapid transformation of cities and urban culture since the 1960s? And what role have films and film industries played in shaping and mediating the “postindustrial” city? This collection argues that cinema and cities have become increasingly intertwined in the era of neoliberalism, urban branding, and accelerated gentrification. Examining a wide range of films from Hollywood blockbusters to indie cinema, it considers the complex, evolving relationship between moving image cultures and the spaces, policies, and politics of US cities from New York, Los Angeles, and Boston to Detroit, Oakland, and Baltimore. The contributors address questions of narrative, genre, and style alongside the urban contexts of production, exhibition, and reception, discussing films including The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), Cruising (1980), Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), King of New York (1990), Inception (2010), Frances Ha (2012), Fruitvale Station (2013), Only Lovers Left Alive (2013), and Doctor Strange (2016).
