Book Description
Why would a unique group of IBM Corporation bachelors choose to leave good stateside jobs and risk their lives to work in a war zone? What are their stories during and after the war? This book describes a U.S. military sponsored mission, gives insight into the business side of war and relates the adventures of dedicated professionals. Read about how data processing was used to monitor and manage the air and ground war. This is the story of IBMs role in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and of the men who laid their lives and careers on the line to support a war that was fought with the help of extensive onsite data processing. Approximately 250 IBM wild ducks were handpicked for these overseas assignments. They worked with, lived with and played with the military while installing and servicing IBM equipment utilized by all services throughout South Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Some IBMers remained overseas after the war, some brought Vietnamese brides home and some returned to traditional IBM careers. All felt a deep patriotic duty to the United States and its intended role in Southeast Asia. They all learned about wartime chaos, danger, love, life and death. IBMs mission escalated and de-escalated in parallel with that of the U.S. forces. By 1973 most US Nationals had withdrawn along with the militarys computing equipment. In 1975 the author took part in an interesting but failed effort to assist IBM Vietnamese employees escape the communists during the Fall of Saigon. The story of how our own US Embassy held these IBMers hostage in Saigon is told for the first time.

Book Description
To be sure, many men have accomplished much more in a two-year time span than this author, but probably not many so diverse as to what is recorded here. This memoir covers Dan’s adventures in 1976 through 1978 while in his mid 40s. The title stems from his multiple sailboat races, including the exciting 1976 Transpacific yacht race to Hawaii, and his hot busy sandy years in Saudi Arabia working for IBM Corporation. He served as an expat at the giant ARAMCO oil company helping to manage their complex data processing needs. The book includes some Middle Eastern history, information about Islam and the Qur’an, plus a few trips to surrounding countries such as Kashmir, India, central Iran, France, and Northern Europe. A few love affairs are mentioned without too many details.

Book Description
From the best-selling author of These Truths, an “exhilarating” (New York Times Book Review) account of the Cold War origins of our data-mad era. The Simulmatics Corporation, founded in 1959, mined data, targeted voters, accelerated news, manipulated consumers, destabilized politics, and disordered knowledge—decades before Facebook, Amazon, and Cambridge Analytica. Although Silicon Valley likes to imagine that it has no past, the scientists of Simulmatics are almost undoubtedly the long-dead ancestors of Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk—or so argues Jill Lepore, distinguished Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer, in this “hilarious, scathing, and sobering” (David Runciman) account of the origins of predictive analytics and behavioral data science.

Book Description
In June 1944 Raymond Stolpe boarded a ship in San Diego headed for the Mariana Islands (Saipan and Tinian) where, he experienced his first combat – a midnight Banzai charge by the enemy- a frantic all-out, all night charge by the enemy. In the morning, Stolpe saw over 1,000 dead enemy soldiers. Later in the Tinian campaign, Lt. Shearer ordered Stolpe and his buddy Charles Leslie to set out booby traps in front of their position. Then at night, when they began lighting up the area in front of Stolpe’s position, they exposed the attacking enemy. Stolpe jumped to his feet and threw a grenade on target and silenced the enemy’s machine gun. Stolpe was one of the very first Americans to land in Nagasaki after the bomb had wiped out the city. His job then became one of peacemaker to the Japanese people. It was a great challenge, but one he was happy to accept.

Book Description
"Why are we here?" To learn. However, this is a difficult task as much of the truly useful information is often hidden, and one can have difficulty deciding where to start digging to find it. Following the flow of a seemingly random freestyle writing exercise, The Big Blue Turtle just starts digging. With a humorous tone, it explores the concepts of life and death, drawing from multiple theories and developments in the human world. Can we really "survive" death? This book argues that we can and provides information on how to do just that. It also discusses a myriad of other intertwining topics, laid out with all the grace of a neighborhood yard sale, upon the tables of which the reader may find something interesting or even useful. Is it new? Of course not. It's a yard sale. But if you dig a bit, you might find something new to you, something of immeasurable value, something that might even shed light on our true purpose in this expansive universe.

Book Description
An inside account of the Progressive Conservative’s campaign organization. The Progressive Conservative Party’s “big blue machine” pioneered electoral techniques of centralized control, communications, campaign advertising, polling, policy-presentation, and fund-raising. Inspired by Dalton Camp and Norman Atkins, its widespread yet close-knit network of organizers and specialists changed how Canadian campaigns were fought, even as their “political machine” transformed Canadian public life itself. J. Patrick Boyer’s behind-the-scenes account reveals how and why the blue machine’s campaign innovations (most imported from the U.S.) transformed Canadian politics forever. Boyer’s direct experience in these changes, and interviews with key players from Tory backrooms, enrich his authentic and timely account. This saga of the formidable campaign organization operating inside the Progressive Conservative Party for more than four decades shows why the big blue machine deservedly became a Canadian political legend.
