Legumes are an important source of protein for humans and animals. They provide nutritionally rich crop residues for animal feed, and playa key role in maintaining the productivity of soils particularly through biological nitro gen fixation. They are, therefore, of immense value in rainfed farming systems. The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) has a responsibility for research on food, pasture, and forage legumes. The Center also has the broad objective of improving livestock production in rainfed farming systems. Although food legumes have be~n known and grown by farmers in the WANA region for a long time, their productivity has remained low and variable. Forage legumes, on the other hand, are not so well known by farmers of the region, and their role in the farming systems is not so well understood. Thus, we need to develop the concept of using forage legumes as crops and to fit them into cropping systems. In its efforts to increase the productivity of food legumes and develop the legume-based crop/livestock systems, ICARDA has established a network of scientists in the different National Agricultural Research Systems in the region. To further strengthen this network, ICARDA convened a workshop on 'The Role of Legumes in the Farming Systems of Mediterranean Areas' in Tunis, Tunisia, 20-24 June 1988. This workshop was co-sponsored by UNDP, who also contributed funds for this publication.

Specifically, we aimed to evaluate the impact of different levels of Napier's grass (Pennisetum pupareum) and Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hay supplementation on feed intake, digestibility, and body weight changes in Hadero Tunto Zuria Woreda local sheep fed on urea-treated wheat straw. The forage legumes and wheat straw were meticulously prepared before the experiment, with urea-treated wheat straw undergoing a 21-day ensiling process. Using a completely randomized block design, we selected ten non-castrated male sheep aged nine to eleven months, each with an initial live weight of 16-18kg, and implemented five treatments. Throughout the 90-day feeding trial, we recorded daily feed intake and body weight changes, collecting and analyzing feces and feed samples for a comprehensive assessment. Treatment groups included varying levels of Urea treated wheat straw and a combination of Napier grass and alfalfa hay. Statistical analysis using STATA 10 and SPSS 20 revealed notable differences in total dry matter, organic matter, and metabolizable energy intake among treatments. Global wheat consumption in the 2016/2017 season is forecasted to reach a record high 736m tonnes, showing a growth of 25% in the last 15 years. This raises the question which outlets the wheat is going into, what the growth of these outlets is, which regions or countries have grown the most, and where do we see future potential. Strong competition of other feed grains like corn is expected to slow the growth of wheat used for feed in the next years, and in the future, companies involved in the grain supply chain and feeding industry will need to be flexible enough to continue to meet this fast-changing demand for feed grains. For feed producers, this means they need to be able to access supplies of different grains from different origins to allow for the cheapest composition of their feed, while grain suppliers need to be able to continuously best engage with global trading opportunities to originate grains in various regions and move them to demand regions as cost-effectively as possible.
