Book Description
The 1957 classic American musical West Side Story has been staged by countless community and school theater groups, but none more ambitious than the 2000 production by MacMurray College, a small school in Jacksonville, Illinois. Diane Brewer, the new drama head at the college, determined to add an extra element to the usual demands of putting on a show by having deaf students perform half of the parts. Deaf Side Story presents a fascinating narrative of Brewer and the cast's efforts to mount this challenging play. Brewer turned to the Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD) to cast the Sharks, the Puerto Rican gang at odds with the Anglo Jets in this musical version of Romeo and Juliet set in the slums of New York. Hearing performers auditioned to be the Jets, and once Brewer had cast her hearing Tony and deaf Maria, then came the challenge of teaching them all to sing/sign and dance the riveting show numbers for which the musical is renowned. She also had to manage a series of sensitive issues, from ensuring the seamless incorporation of American Sign Language into the play to reassuring ISD administrators and students that the production would not be symbolic of any conflict between Deaf and hearing people. Author Mark Rigney portrays superbly the progress of the production, including the frustrations and triumphs of the leads, the labyrinthine campus and community politics, and the inevitable clashes between the deaf high school cast members and their hearing college counterparts. His representations of the many individuals involved are real and distinguished. The ultimate success of the MacMurray production reverberates in Deaf Side Story as a keen depiction of how several distinct individuals from as many cultures could cooperate to perform a classic American art form brilliantly together.

Book Description
A product of an unconventional childhood and unorthodox family, Dathan Charles is ambitious to create a business empire. A concealed mixture of ruthlessness and loyalty, she attracts the unwanted attention of Colonel Heydrich of the SS in Berlin in 1934 and later that year of Gregory Capeto, a notorious gangster from the years of Prohibition. In New York she builds her business against a background of interference from the Justice Department, the Treasury, organised crime and her partners. Returning to Germany, to fulfil a promise to a close friend, she falls foul of the now, General Heydrich. Wanted for murder Dathan escapes realising, without knowing why her uncle, a diplomat has sold her out. He is just one more of the many lethal adversaries who cross her path, whilst bearing gifts. Dathan's life and business interests only survive because of her Byzantine mind plotting a course through the intricacies of a multi-layered existence. As the years pass all the threads of her complex affairs are relentlessly drawn together and she apparently makes full disclosure. All is not what it seems; it is only part of her vengeance against those who would ruin her, her business and family in America and England.

Through studies of works by three composers, this text seeks to demonstrate that 'assimilating Jewish music' is as much a process audiences themselves engage in when they listen to Jewish music as it is something critics and musicologists do when they write about it.

Book Description
Author David R. Bock became an atheist in high school and studied philosophy as an undergraduate, including two years at the University of Vienna. A mystical encounter in a monastery in Germany and conversations with Catholic priests and laypeople caused him to rethink his views of God and religion. When David shifted to economics at Oxford and started his career, he continued to encounter people who talked to him about spirituality, Jesus of Nazareth, and the supernatural nature of the Christian walk. His journey from atheism to faith culminated during a dinner with friends when he was overwhelmed by the love of God and dramatically set free from the intellectual shackles of his atheism. Written in the form of a diary, The Journal of a Reluctant Atheist tells the story of David’s conversion from atheism to Christian faith. This intellectual transformation spans a decade in his life from college to graduate school, marriage, and beginning a career in international finance and development. A Rhodes Scholar, David describes how God reveals himself through nature, other people, and personal experience, all the while leaving us free to choose between atheism and faith.
