Book Description
Friday 28 July 2019: Eleven years after Jay-Z became the first hip-hop artist to headline the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, Stormzy finally became the first English rapper to follow suit. The South London rapper, wearing a customised stab-proof vest designed by Banksy, put in an explosive performance and finished his set by thanking many of the “legends for paving the way,” name-checking the likes of Wiley, Dizzee Rascal, and Giggs. Yet British rap has a nuanced, rich, and often misunderstood history that factors in socioeconomics, gender, identity, music industry disruption, and innovation. Despite how unlikely it looked for decades, UK rap is now firmly part of pop music and the greater hip-hop canon. What Do You Call It? charts the journey of UK rap music over nearly forty years. It begins in the early 1980s when rap landed on our odd little island. Imported through the electro-driven hip-hop of Afrika Bambaataa, the sound was shaped by sound system culture, inspired by punk, and accelerated by rave. The result is a music that does not stand still. From Britcore to UK hip-hop via the deep outer reaches of trip-hop in the late twentieth century, through to the tumultuous opening decades of the twenty-first century and the urban claustrophobia of MC-driven garage, grime, and drill. Through a combination of cultural theory, historical research, and dozens of interviews with the scene protagonists—including Jazzie B, Klashnekoff, Skinnyman, and Wiley, through to contemporary artists like Tion Wayne and Loyle Carner— the book tells the origin stories of classic albums and mixtapes, anthemic singles, vital scenes, long-forgotten but important labels, and the artists who would change the course of British music and culture.

Book Description
What effect has globalization had on our understanding of literacy? Grassroots Literacy seeks to address the relationship between globalization and the widening gap between ‘grassroots’ literacies, or writings from ordinary people and local communities, and ‘elite’ literacies. Displaced from their original context to elite literacy environments in the form of letters, police declarations and pieces of creative writing, ‘grassroots’ literacies are unsurprisingly easily disqualified, either as ‘bad’ forms of literacy, or as messages that fail to be understood. Through close analysis of two unique, handwritten documents from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jan Blommaert considers how ‘grassroots’ literacy in the Third World develops outside the literacy-saturated environments of the developed world. In examining these documents produced by socially and economically marginalized writers Blommaert demonstrates how literacy environments should be understood as relatively autonomous systems. Grassroots Literacy will be key reading for students of language and literacy studies as well as an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in understanding the implications of globalization on local literacy practices.

Book Description
LONGLISTED FOR THE GORDON BURN PRIZE 2019 SHORTLISTED FOR THE ENCORE PRIZE 2020 Sammy and his three friends are country boys from Armagh, the disputed borderlands of a country cannbalising itself. They love sharp clothes, a drink, and a night on the town singing Perry Como's classics. Their dream is a Free State, and their methods for achieving this are uncompromising. Heading for Belfast - ground zero of the Troubles - they find themselves in the incongruous position of running a comic book shop by day. Their clandestine activities belong in the x-rated pages of graphic fiction: burglary, blackmail, extortion, torture, and murder. No criminal act is too taboo for these boys. But when punk rock arrives and the hard edge of the decade starts to reveal its true paranoid colours, Sammy finds himself increasingly isolated. Camaraderie and loyalty is the fuel of a terrorist cell. When those virtues prove faulty, the game is up - and Sammy's world starts to radically shrink. For the Good Times shouts and sings with visionary intensity and gallows humour. It is not just a book about the IRA, but an exploration of what it means to 'go rogue', and the heartbreak and devastation that commitment to 'the cause' can engender. It unpacks any dewy-eyed romance associated with the Troubles, and establishes David Keenan as one of our generation's most fearless and entertaining literary stylists.
