Book Description
In 2008, the artist Adam Cullen invited journalist Erik Jensen to stay in his spare room and write his biography. What followed were four years of intense honesty and a relationship that became increasingly claustrophobic. At one point Cullen shot Jensen, in part to see how committed he was to the book. At another, he threw Jensen from a speeding motorbike. The book contract Cullen used to convince Jensen to stay with him never existed. Acute Misfortune is a riveting account of the life and death of one of Australia’s most celebrated artists, the man behind the Archibald Prize–winning portrait of David Wenham. Jensen follows Cullen through drug deals and periods of deep self-reflection, onwards into his court appearance for weapons possession and finally his death in 2012 at the age of forty-six. After much critical acclaim, Acute Misfortune was developed into a feature film, winning The Age Critics Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2018. The story is by turns tender and horrifying: a spare tale of art, sex, drugs and childhood, told at close quarters and without judgement. Winner of the 2015 Nib Waverley Library Award for Literature Shortlisted in the 2015 Victorian Premier's Literary Awards and for the 2015 Walkley Book Award ‘Erik Jensen is a Boswell or Vasari for our baffled, fractured, fucked-up times. Acute Misfortune is the most intimate, revealing, and original take on an artist’s life I know of.’ —Sebastian Smee ‘Erik Jensen gives us that ingenious place where biography is also art.’ —Jennifer Clement ‘This is supposed to be about an artist, a wild man, his lifetime, and it is; but Jensen has written such a beautiful window that all art and life is shining through. I'm supposed to be an artist but I cannot put this down.’ —DBC Pierre

Book Description
Dedicated to the Sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the final voyage of USS Indianapolis and to those who survived the torment at sea following its sinking. plus the crews that risked their lives in rescue ships. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a decorated World War II warship that is primarily remembered for her worst 15 minutes. . This ship earned ten (10) battle stars for her service in World War II and was credited for shooting down nine (9) enemy planes. However, this fame was overshadowed by the first 15 minutes July 30, 1945, when she was struck by two (2) torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58 and sent to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. The sinking of Indianapolis and the loss of 880 crew out of 1,196 --most deaths occurring in the 4-5 day wait for a rescue delayed --is a tragedy in U.S. naval history. This historical reference showcases primary source documents to tell the story of Indianapolis, the history of this tragedy from the U.S. Navy perspective. It recounts the sinking, rescue efforts, follow-up investigations, aftermath and continuing communications efforts. Included are deck logs to better understand the ship location when she sunk and testimony of survivors and participants. For additional historical publications produced by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, please check out these resources here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/naval-history-heritage-command Year 2016 marked the 71st anniversary of the sinking and another spike in public attention on the loss -- including a big screen adaptation of the story, talk of future films, documentaries, and planned expeditions to locate the wreckage of the warship.

Book Description
In the aftermath of more than seven decades of U.S. interventions in the Middle East, the region remains a complex web of proxy wars, fragile alliances, and entrenched conflicts. From the covert operations that toppled Iran’s Mohammad Mosaddegh in 1953, to the ill-fated invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East has been marked by a recurring pattern of short-term victories at the cost of long-term stability. Yet, time and again, the United States has engaged in conflicts driven by a mixture of geopolitical ambitions, strategic miscalculations, and ideological commitments, often leaving the region more unstable than before. From the Cold War’s ideological struggles to the War on Terror's fight against jihadism, Weapons of Misfortune critically examines the global implications of U.S. interventions—how the decisions to arm insurgents, back proxy forces, and topple regimes have inadvertently created power vacuum that birthed insurgencies, extremist movements, hostile regimes and enduring instability. The focus is on how U.S. actions, whether driven by ideological goals, the desire for geopolitical dominance, or securing immediate security interests, have often backfired, empowering adversaries from al-Qaeda to ISIS, and allowing other global players like Russia and China to expand their influence in regions once dominated by the U.S. This book provides a detailed analysis of pivotal events—such as the Iranian Revolution of 1979, the rise of ISIS, the civil war in Yemen and Syria, the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, and the post-9/11 invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq —to illustrate how the U.S.'s reliance on military force and proxy alliances has frequently undermined its long-term strategic objectives. It also delves into the humanitarian consequences of these interventions, highlighting how U.S.-backed wars have contributed to refugee crises, sectarian violence, and the destabilization of entire regions. Weapons of Misfortune reveal the recurring flaws in U.S. strategy: a tendency to prioritize immediate tactical victories over the nuanced political, social, and economic realities of the countries it seeks to influence. Through a meticulous analysis of the historical context of U.S. actions, this book offers a clear-eyed reflection on the failures of regime change, the pitfalls of arming proxy forces, and the unintended consequences of creating power vacuums that allow insurgent groups like al-Qaeda, ISIS, and the Taliban to thrive. The book’s critical reflection on U.S. interventions offers not only a sober assessment of past mistakes but also lessons for the future. It suggests potential strategies for how the U.S. can re-engage in the Middle East—and other volatile regions—without repeating the same errors. By embracing diplomacy, multilateral cooperation, and a deeper understanding of local dynamics, the book argues that the U.S. can move away from its over-reliance on military solutions and instead promote stability, good governance, and sustainable development in a region that remains pivotal to global security. Weapons of Misfortune is a must-read for policymakers, scholars, and anyone interested in understanding the long-term implications of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. The book does not shy away from confronting uncomfortable truths, but rather aims to equip readers with the insights needed to craft a more thoughtful, sustainable, and effective path forward. As the U.S. faces a shifting global order, marked by the rise of China, Russia, and other regional powers, Weapons of Misfortune serves as a timely reminder that the choices made in distant capitals have real and lasting consequences on the ground. By reflecting on the lessons of the past, this book offers a roadmap for a more nuanced, responsible, and contextually informed approach to U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and beyond.

Book Description
The concept of friendship is more easily valued than it is described: this volume brings together reflections on its meaning and practice in a variety of social and cultural settings in history and in the present time, focusing on Asia and the Western, Euro-American world. The extension of the group in which friendship is recognized, and degrees of intimacy (whether or not involving an erotic dimension) and genuine appreciation may vary widely. Friendship may simply include kinship bonds—solidarity being one of its more general characteristics. In various contexts of travelling, migration, and a dearth of offspring, friendship may take over roles of kinship, also in terms of care.

Book Description
Discover four seminal masterworks of Chinese thought—Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, the Analects of Confucius, the Chuang Tzu, and the Mencius—presented in one volume for the first time in nearly two centuries. Award-winning translator David Hinton offers fresh insights on the most influential texts on Taoism, Zen Buddhism, Chinese philosophy, and more. Hinton’s award–winning experience translating a wide range of ancient Chinese poets makes these books sing in English as never before. But these new versions are not only inviting and immensely readable—they also apply much-needed consistency to key philosophical terms in these texts, lending structural links and philosophical rigor heretofore unavailable in English. Breathing new life into these classics, Hinton’s new translations will stand as the definitive texts for our era. Perhaps the most broadly influential spiritual text in human history, Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching is the source of Taoist philosophy, which eventually developed into Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism. Equally influential in the social sphere, Confucius’ Analects is the source of social wisdom in China. The Chuang Tzu is the wild and wacky prose complement to the Tao Te Ching. And with its philosophical storytelling, the Mencius adds depth and complexity to Confucius’ vision.

Book Description
Books are amongst the most personal of gifts. The book we choose to give a loved one is informed by our intimate knowledge of their personal histories and their tastes. Often, when we gift books, we love to explain the meaning behind our present by writing an inscription within its pages. Ordinarily, we hope the gift and its message will be enjoyed, placed lovingly on its new owner's bookshelf and treasured forever. This is not always the case, though ... W B Gooderham is fascinated by second-hand books and curates a growing collection of those featuring intriguing inscriptions. The messages he finds range from the awkward scratchings of adolescent infatuation, to the resentful recriminations of a love affair gone sour and offer illuminating glimpses into their books' own secret histories. This beautifully presented book will feature the very best from the author's collection of dedications alongside the covers of the works in which they were found. From Animal Farm to Pride and Prejudice, there's something here to please every book lover's taste.
