Though the Egyptians lacked theatre, this is a specialized phenomenon within the broader category of performance. Their festivals should be considered a type of performance, one that achieves specific outcomes. Using performance theorists such as Austin and Hunningher and the specific examples of the Sed festival, this paper argues that Egyptian rituals were performative acts that drew on the divine to create change in the world. This was achieved through an identification with the mythic past and an understanding of time as being cyclical, which enabled pharaoh to recreate the outcome of the past event he was re-enacting.
