For a fifth time our nation is face to face with a war the gravity of which it is impossible to estimate at the present time. The first war brought us our liberty and independence; the second established our reputation on the sea; the third taught our Mexican neighbor respect for our country; tho fourth saved the Union, and the fifth, which is now being waged, was provoked in tho cause of humanity. For centuries the beautiful neighboring island of Cuba has been in the greedy grasp of a foreign nation. The people to whom this gem of tho ocean belongs have been downtrodden, tyrannized over and abused by the cold iron hand of an effete monarchy. The humane liberty-loving people of the United States have heard the cry of the oppressed starving Cubans for years, and have done all in their power, short of resort to the sword, to relieve their sufferings, but without avail. The ear of the proud, cowardly Spainard remained deaf to well-meant and most earnest appeals. Tho Chief Executive of the United States exhausted every resource to improve the condition of the native Cubans, the rightful owners of the unfortunate island, without bloodshed, but all his efforts were ignored and antagonized by the brutal oppressors. War is always a great calamity, but when entered upon for the sake of humanity, for the relief of the oppressed, it becomes a weapon in the hand of the Almighty. The issue before us is a righteous one, and it is not difficult to forecast the ultimate result. Justice and humanity are on our side; corruption and oppression on the other. On our part the struggle is purely unselfish; on the other it is a desperate but vain attempt to ignore the claims of an enslaved people. Such are the conditions of the present war with Spain, at the same time our people will now and for all time come "Remember the Maine." William Bowen Campbell of Tennessee, Written to Governor David Campbell of Virginia, 1846-1847: With Introduction and Notes I have two fine horses which I brought from Tenn. They have been much worsted in the voyage here, but I h0pe soon to recruit them and make them serve me during the campaign, and I have an Irish servant who is kind and attentive and serve-s me faithfully. So do not fear but I shall get on well if some disease does not overtake me. There are now more than twelve thousand volunteers in the army of occupation scattered along the Rio Grande, here and about Point Isabel and towards Matamoras, and if Genl. Taylor had the means of supplying his army, he could make an immediate move upon Monterey and could strike an effective blow. This is a much worse country to campaign in than Florida. Water and wood is so very scarce. I have not seen timber yet. We cook with coal brought from Ohio or Penn. Florida has an abundance of fine timber and excellent water. Again adieu.
