Book Description
The Code of Hammurabi. Martin Luther's Ninety-five Theses. The radical notions that launched the French Revolution. The beliefs that propelled the American Civil Rights movement. These are only a few of the thousands of concepts described in this remarkable chronicle of intellectual history. Presenting the ideas of philosophers, prophets, scholars, critics, educators, revolutionaries and reformers, the Fitzroy Dearborn Chronology of Ideas concentrates on the famous - as well as infamous - concepts that have changed the world. Here, too, are the historical turning points that resulted from the application of those ideas - the natural flow of the American Revolution from the concept of democratic liberalism, for example, or the Russian Revolution from Marxism.

Book Description
Barbara Williamson proved the validity of one aspect of Sandstone that women in their 30's, 40's and 50's can be as alluring and sexually attractive as a twenty-year-old Bunny or Pet. -Robert Rimmer Author Barbara Williamson shares her story for the first time ever as cofounder of the highly successful and controversial Sandstone Retreat in the late 1960s and early 1970s. SANDSTONE Retreat quickly became outrageously popular with membership reaching five hundred, and numerous newspapers, magazines, books, movies, and television shows clamoring for interviews. SANDSTONE Retreat became known as the hub of the sexual revolution. John was branded as +The Messiah of Sex+ and I as the most liberated woman in America. Based on mutual trust and friendship, the bond between John and me grew so strong that we were inseparable for forty-seven years until his death. University professors nationwide rushed to visit this new kind of unstructured free love community to view and study members joyously living an alternate lifestyle. The dress code was optional but most everyone preferred nudity. Our goal at Sandstone was understanding society and setting it free. We believe in the sexual self as being at the core of organized social behavior. When sexuality is distorted, it leads to a distortion of the basic self. Upon my retirement we settled in Fallon, Nevada, and responded to an urgent call to save the lives of lions and tigers facing homelessness and euthanasia. Within thirty days, a permanent home was built for them. Now, we must learn how to feed and care for them. This book offers insight into their personalities. It may shock you to know how much alike we are with these magical creatures on the brink of extinction.

Book Description
An internationally recognized scientist presents his theories and associated technology for the coming generations of adaptive intelligent machines. In this extraordinary book, the pioneer of research in collective learning systems (an adaptive learning paradigm for artificial intelligence) describes the processes of cognition, postulates a fundamental adaptive building block for assembling very large scale collective learning systems (the learning cell), and proposes a design for the ultimate machine: a hierarchical network of 100 million learning cells that could exhibit the full range of cognitive capabilities of the human mind. The author predicts that using the classical "expert system" approach to create such a vast knowledge base would require thousands of years to program all the rules. As a feasible alternative, he explains how a massive collective learning system could achieve this goal in about 20 years, much as humans do. Based on natural biological precedents, a collective learning system acquires its knowledge through trial-and-error interaction with the real world. To put it all in proper perspective, the author introduces a theory of games for modeling the various processes of the universe, presents a futuristic glimpse of the creation of the first artificially cognitive being, and discusses the philosophical issues raised by the prospect of creating machines that exhibit human-like cognition. Two chapters are devoted to the design and evaluation of collective learning systems. The final chapter presents the remarkable results of an on-going international research project directed by the author, a parallel-processing collective learning system that simulates the sub-symbolic adaptive vision functions of the brain.
