"Woman and the Infinite demonstrates how Pedro Salinas's poetry and frequently overlooked narrative and theater reveal a preoccupation with the nature of time, especially extraordinary moments that transcend space and time. Many of these moments are intimately connected with the man-woman, yo-tu relationship. Salinas's exploration of this theme is best understood in the context of other modern literary evocations of epiphanic moments. Such literary phenomena as William Wordsworth's "spots of time" and James Joyce's "epiphanies" are among the precursors of Salinas's moments of eternity, as are moments of timelessness in works by Marcel Proust and the French Symbolist poets. Salinas's reception of the Symbolists was direct, but also refracted through his reading of the Latin American modernistas, especially Ruben Dario. In his well-known commentary on Dario, Salinas connects the perception of woman with a visionary moment of extraordinary lucidity, a connection found in his own works." "Woman is elusive for Salinas. She has a multiplicity of forms and varying identities that are expressed with mirrors and shadows or Classical and Biblical mythological archetypes. Nuevos espíritus contemporáneos continúa el trabajo de investigación trazado en Espíritus contemporáneos. Relaciones literarias luso-españolas entre el Modernismo y la Vanguardia (Renacimiento, 2008), que es, a su vez, heredero directo de otros libros de Antonio Sáez Delgado publicados con anterioridad en España y Portugal. Writer, critic, and cultural activist José Bergamín (1895-1983) was unjustly relegated to the sidelines of contemporary Spanish intellectual life for reasons that have more to do with his political dissidence and long periods of exile than with the interest and importance of his written work. This book represents the first attempt to come to terms with that work. Professor Dennis's study focuses on the period 1920-1936, the so-called silver age of Spanish literature, during which Bergamín rose to prominence alongside a group of superlatively gifted writers and friends, among them Frederico Garcia Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Jorge Guillén, and Pedro Salinas. It sets out to explain the nature of the relationship Bergamín had as a critic and prose writer with the major poets of the 1920s and 1930s, and at the same time systematically examines the singularity of his own work as an aphorist, essayist, and dramatist. Professor Dennis also devotes attention to explaining the sense of Bergamín's initiative in founding the important journal Cruz y Raya (1933-1936) and the role this publication played, both culturally and politically, during the troubled years of the Second Republic. The "idle fictions" of the vanguard novel of the 1920s and 1930s in Spain and Spanish America represented a kind of interlude of playfulness--a vacation or parenthetical insertion--in what was perceived as the established course of the modern Hispanic novel's development. Yet, as Pérez Firmat argues, though this genre saw itself as recreative and interstitial, it deliberately precipitated "a class war not between social classes but between literary classes." Concentrating on source material not widely available, Pérez Firmat reconstructs the reception these novels received at the time of their publication, then develops a reading of them based on the intellectual context of this reception. Narrative, because it prioritizes the analysis of prose over poetry, against the traditional use of critical literature on the subject up to this point.
