For some divertor aspects, such as detached plasmas or the private flux zone, it is not clear that the controlling physics has been fully identified. This is a particular concern when the details of the plasma are likely to be important in modeling the problem--for example, modeling co-deposition in detached inner divertors. An empirical method of ''reconstructing'' the plasma based on direct experimental measurements may be useful in such situations. It is shown that a detached plasma in the outer divertor leg of DIII-D can be reconstructed reasonably well using spectroscopic and probe data as input to a simple onion-skin model and the Monte Carlo hydrogenic code, EIRENE. The calculated 2D distributions of n{sub e} and T{sub e} in the detached divertor were compared with direct measurements from the divertor Thomson scattering system, a diagnostic capability unique to DIII-D.

NEWT1D, a one dimensional multifluid model of the scrape-off layer and divertor plasma, has been used to model the plasma including the distribution of carbon ionization states in the SOL and divertor of ELMing H-mode at two injected power levels in DIII-D. Comparison of the code predictions to the measured divertor and scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma density and temperature shows good agreement. Comparison of the predicted line emissions to the spectroscopic data suggests that physically sputtered carbon from the strike point is not transported up the flux tube; a distributed source of carbon a few centimeters up the flux tube is required to achieve reasonable agreement.

The research carried out on this grant was motivated by the high power emission from the CIV doublet at 155 nm in the DIII-D divertor and to study the characteristics of the radiative divertor. The radiative divertor is designed to reduce the heat load to the target plates of the divertor by reducing the energy in the divertor plasma using upstream scrape-off-layer (SOL) radiation. In some cases, particularly in Partially Detached Divertor (PDD) operations, this emission accounts for more than 50% of the total radiation from the divertor. In PDD operation, produced by neutral gas injection, the particle flow to the target plate and the divertor temperature are significantly reduced. A father motivation was to study the CIV emission distribution in the lower, open divertor and the upper baffled divertor. Two Vacuum Ultra Violet Tangential viewing Television cameras (VUV TTV) were constructed and installed in the upper, baffled and the lower, open divertor. The images recorded by these cameras were then inverted to produce two-dimensional distributions of CIV in the poloidal plane. Results obtained in the project are summarized in this report.

A multichannel spectrometer with high spectral resolution (0.01 nm) and high temporal resolution (0.5 msec) has been configured to collect data simultaneously from eight viewchords spanning the divertor region of DIII-D. Fiberoptically coupled to a wide-field lens with a vertical view of the vessel floor, the instrument will be capable of differentiating the behavior of impurity line emission at the inner and outer divertor strike points, on and off the Advanced Divertor Program (ADP) ring, on the face of the DIvertor Material Exposure System (DIMES) probe, and in the region of the lower centerpost. Used with a coarse grating (300 grooves/mm), spectral coverage of each spatial channel is 15 nm with 0.3 nm resolution; used in high order with a 1200 groove/nm grating, the instrument is capable of resolving Doppler profiles. Spatial variation of gas recycling and impurity influx will be studied for both single- and double-null divertor configurations in low and high density operating regimes.

Enhanced radiative losses with accompanying divertor heat flux reductions have been achieved on DIII-D by the puffing of deuterium and/or neon gas. In addition these highly radiating, reduced divertor heat flux regimes have been extended to lower core plasma density through cryopumping in the divertor. This paper describes the magnitude, distribution and other characteristics of the radiation obtained during these experiments. Radiated power is measured by two poloidally separated 24-channel bolometer arrays. One array views from above, the other from below the midplane. The radiated power profile is reconstructed by assuming constant emissivity on a flux surface for the core and SOL plasma and paramterizating the divertor radiation by flux surface and distance above the divertor floor. Images of visible line radiation in the divertor provide information about the distribution of impurities; e.g., a tangential image is inverted to provide a poloidal profile of the emissivity. The core plasma impurity densities are measured by charge-exchange spectroscopy techniques.
