Medical Imaging and Augmented Reality
Author: Takeyoshi Dohi
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540799826
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 457
Book Description
The 4th International Workshop on Medical Imaging and Augmented Reality, MIAR 2008, was held at the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan during August 1–2, 2008. The goal of MIAR 2008 was to bring together researchersin medical imaging and intervention to present state-of-the-art developments in this ever-growing research area. Rapid technical advances in medical imaging, including its gr- ing application in drug/gene therapy and invasive/interventional procedures, have attracted signi?cant interest in the close integration of research in the life sciences, medicine, physical sciences, and engineering. Current research is also motivated by the fact that medical imaging is moving increasingly from a p- marily diagnostic modality towards a therapeutic and interventional aid, driven by the streamlining of diagnostic and therapeutic processes for human diseases by means of imaging modalities and robotic-assisted surgery. The impact of MIAR on these ?elds increases each year, and the quality of submitted papers this yearwas veryimpressive. We received90 full submissions, which were subsequently reviewed by up to ?ve reviewers. Reviewer a?liations were carefully checked against author a?liations to avoid con?icts of interest, and the review process was run as a double-blind process. A special procedure was also devised for papers from the universities of the organizers, upholding a double-blind review process for these papers. The MIAR 2008 Program C- mittee ?nally accepted 44 full papers. For this workshop, we also included three papers from the invited speakers coveringregistration and segmentation, virtual reality, and perceptual docking for robotic control.

Functional Preservation and Quality of Life in Head and Neck Radiotherapy
Author: Paul M. Harari
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540732322
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 323
Book Description
The emphasis on cancer management in the past was based primarily on control rates from multidisciplinary input in management. There has always been a recognition that one would like to achieve the best result with the least complication, but never has there been any major emphasis on evidence-based outcome studies, nor on functional preservation and quality of life. The authors of this book have dealt very effectively with the various tumor types in head and neck cancer with the experts in the ? eld of management. The contents range from epidemiology and treatment outcome, treatment techniques with the potential impact on the quality of life such as dysphagia, to the various options relative to high technology radiation therapy programs for mana- ment. The potential for improving form and function through surgical care as an integrated part of the program is dealt with very effectively as well as the potentials for chemotherapy and the use of targeted agents have on quality of life issues. The volume also addresses toxicity, quality of life, and techniques for prevention of adverse effects, as well as the potentials for rehabilitation and supportive care. The authors have clearly done an extraordinarily good job in addressing the mul- plicity of problems that impact upon the functional preservation and quality of life in head and neck radiation therapy. Radiation Oncology for Cure and Palliation
Author: R.G. Parker
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662052253
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
Given that treatment with curative intent is possible in only one-half of cancer victims, and that such treatment frequently fails, the majority of patients with cancer will require relief of symptoms and signs caused by their disease. In this book, the specific contribution of radiation therapy to palliation is considered within the context of multidisciplinary management. Individual chapters are devoted to palliative radiation therapy for primary tumours and metastases at different sites. The management of pain is discussed, and chapters are also devoted to end of life care, the management of complications of radiation therapy, and useful medications. This book will prove useful to radiation oncologists and medical students.

Radiological Imaging of the Ureter
Author: Francis Joffre
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642558313
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 350
Book Description
For several decades, the diagnosis of diseases affecting the ureter was based on intravenous excretory urography and techniques of direct opacification. However, the diagnostic strategy has been extensively modified by the advent of helical computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. This book, the first to focus specifically on ureteral imaging, covers both the new and the traditional techniques. Their use in the variety of scenarios involving ureteral disease is clearly elucidated with the aid of high-quality informative images.

Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
Diagnostic sonography of the peripheral nervous system is an evolving specialty of musculoskeletal ultrasound. This book provides an in-depth description of sonographic examination technique - how to access an individual nerve with sonography and how to interpret local findings. A particular focus is on sonographic-anatomic correlations. All currently possible clinical applications are addressed, including the evaluation of nerve compression syndromes, traumatic lesions, tumors, and postoperative complications. The book contains a huge number of high-quality patient sonograms, all derived from cases with clinical and in many instances surgical correlation.

Clinical Target Volumes in Conformal and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy
Author: Vincent Gregoire
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662062704
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
Conformal radiation therapy represents a new challenge. It offers the prospect of either increasing the radiation dose to target tissues while delivering a similar dose to organs at risk, or reducing the dose to organs at risk while maintaining the dose to target tissues. First, lymph node areas at risk are established using the available data from pathological examination. Then, based on a three-dimensional description of the anatomical regions, guidelines for the delineation of the clinical target volumes are proposed. The data presented should enable the reader to make appropriate decisions regarding the selection and delineation of the target volumes when confronted with the most frequent tumor types and sites.
