Book Description
This spellbinding tale of friendship and enmity, of loyalty and betrayal, of pride and humility, that unites and divides a group of remarkable individuals, who are involved in the Hungarian Revolution and its aftermath. Exiles and emigres, ex-diplomats and Intelligence agents, former prizewinning writers, Party hacks -- all these former people struggling to resume their former more exalted positions, or giving up the pride of place they once enjoyed. Rothberg gives penetrating insights into how international policies are arrived at, how revolutions are won and lost, how the people who make the policies and fight the revolutions fare, and who pays the prices for their failures. In doing so, The Former People also makes clearer the mystery of how the Soviet Empire would, in the not-too-distant future, fall apart.

Book Description
"The history of National Socialism in Austria has not been widely examined. It was not until 1981 that an English language history was available on the "forgotten Nazis" in Austria, yet the country was well known to have been a breeding ground of Nazism. Editor F. Parkinson assembled a group of historians and political scientists to undertake a scholarly inquiry into all ramifications of Nazism in Austria before and after the Anschluss. They investigated the activities and attitudes of those in power as well as those in all other segments of the population, whether in Vienna or in the provinces, whether organized in political parties or professing certain creeds. Contributors outline Austria's political decline during the last half of the nineteenth century, Austrian inability to restore the monarchist system during the first republic, the slide of conservatives and socialists to National Socialism, reactions to National Socialism between 1938 and 1945, and the reconstruction of republicanism since 1945, with its emphasis on political conservatism. Solicited to mark the anniversary of the Anschluss, the essays in this volume will be of interest to specialists in Austrian history, students of the Holocaust and Nazi period, and historians of modern Central and Eastern Europe." Book Description
In this book, for the first time, an examination of Egon Schiele’s general painting technique is carried out. The main case study for this comprehensive investigation is the painting “Stadtende/Häuserbogen III,” 1918, one of Egon Schiele’s last works, which is housed at Universalmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Austria. In this book, the conservation campaign is detailed: uncovering portrait sketches integrated and painted over in the painting, unmasking the signature as a forgery, and recognising the frame as the original decorative frame. The research in the years following the conservation is detailed: discussing that, among other pigments, cadmium sulphide was confirmed in the paint material, which will influence subsequent conservation measures for the painting. The book’s examination continues with the complex interactions between environment and object that were also addressed in recently completed EU projects, concluding that continuously gained knowledge about external influences and storage materials used will help to adapt further measures to the painting as it continues to degrade.
