Book Description
Excerpt from Victorian Recollections The first incentive to writing this book was the slighting way in which people, who very likely know little about the matter, are accustomed to write and talk about the Victorian era, as if everything done during that period by those whom we had been brought up to honour and respect was quite futile and absurd. Probably the same class of people will - if the earth should last so long - in the twenty-first century be disparaging and sneering at the present era, with as much or as little reason. It is perhaps better to be a laudator temporis acti se puero - of which genus I consider myself quite a mild specimen - than to cast an undeserved stigma on one's ancestors. I have, at any rate, admitted the error of the Victorian statesmen in their neglect of agriculture - fully acquiesced in by our present-century rulers during the fourteen years preceding the War, which would have been ample time, given the necessary inclination and ability, to restore the land to its former prosperity. I should be the last to belittle the immense advance in engineering and other sciences which followed on the introduction of steam. Excerpt from Some Eminent Victorians: Personal Recollections in the World of Art and Letters Those of us who have emerged from the Victorian Era with an undiminished reverence for the great names which have made it memorable, must be pre pared to endure with patience the pitying tolerance, or even the indulgent rebuke, of the men who herald a younger generation. Book Description
Excerpt from Memories of Victorian London May I dare to hope that a few words of preface to this book of "Memories" will hold my readers' attention for a moment, as it is very necessary that they should be written? In my former volume of "Recollections," no reference was made to certain episodes which must always rank among the great days of my life, yet which did not fit in with the general tenor of that book. They had an interest all their own. They could not be dismissed with a passing tribute. They merited more - much more. They haunted me in many a lonely Highland glen, or by the waters of some lapping lake - and the time seems now come when they can be put on record. For it was my happy fate to be from time to time, from early youth onwards, the guest of a beloved relation, to me as a sister, in her London home, where she was the centre of a singularly attractive circle. Albeit a rich and handsome young married woman with abundance of energy and leisure, she cared nothing for gay society, but sought and was sought by many either already prominent in the world of letters, or destined to become so. Book Description
Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Early Melbourne Victoria More than thirty-one years have elapsed since I left Melbourne, after a residence there of seventeen years, broken, however, by two intermediate visits Home. I think with wondering enjoyment of what I am to see in the colony and its capital after such an interval. Previously, when I returned after only a year or two's absence, I was wont to mark with astonishment all that had been done in that comparatively brief time. I am thankful to Mr. Froude, whose delightful work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Recollections of an Old Boy MY friends insist that I put these old remi niscences into writing; are they my enemies? Sometimes I think so; but it is certainly true that often without premeditation or deliberate intan tion on my part I have been thrown, to quote Virgil, per varios casos, atque tot discrimina rerum into events, either as a sirnple observer or as a more or less active participant, that have been epoch making. The main events are those of the three decades of the middle Victorian period, which were so full of incident and in which so much of history - social, scientific, war like, and dynastic - was enacted, just far distant enough from the present generation to be shadowy, except to the relatively few who have attained their seventy-five years or better, as myself.
