El departamento en toda su ex tension es una llanura que en algunos puntos no se eleva menos de 10 6 pies sobre el nivel del mar. Su clima es frio comparado con el de la costa pero muy sano. Es abundante de ganado y produce asimismo muchas patatas y cebada la cual siegan a menudo mientras es tá verde dándole por forraje á los caballos. Las llamas, los guanacos y las alpacas se crían en abundancia en este distri to y en él se ven tambien muchas vicuñas 6 pacos (canulas vícunna Lin.) animal del ta maño de una oveja, que se halla cubierto de una lana de color leonado muy fina y suave que le cuelga en largos mechones debajo del pe cho y sirve para tejer telas preciosas. Puno es una ciudad bastante considerable á la cual un escritor apreciable el general Miller que gobernó por algun tiempo la provincia da una poblacion de almas que sin embar go el sabio inglés Mr. Pentland reduce a Muy floreciente cuando se beneñciaban las mi nas ha decaído en tales términos que en la pla za central que fue en otro tiempo su ornamen to no hay ahora una sola casa donde no falten puertas 6 ventanas ó alguna parte del techo. Por la mañana sirve esta plaza de mercado donde se vende carne de llama patatas pan de trigo cuya harina traen de Arequipa quince y otros comestibles; pero no se ven otras frutas que membrillos y granadas que á pesar de ser de mala calidad se venden muy caras. Segun Mr. Pentland la ciudad se halla a una altura de pies ingleses, y el lago á la de lo que da a la primera un exceso de elevacion de 70 pies.
