Book Description
Excerpt from Vermont, the Land of Green Mountains Long, long ago, so long ago that nobody knows just when or where it was given, the name Green mountains was bestowed upon the mountain range that extends through the State of Vermont from its southern to its northern border. The most that is known concerning the origin of this name is that it was given by the French, the first Europeans to visit this region. If Samuel Champlain, the discoverer of these mountains, gave them a name, he did not record that fact in his journals, which were kept with much care. It is more probable that some French soldier sailing southward over Lake Champlain on a warlike expedition into the Mohawk country, or some pious Jesuit priest traveling by canoe toward the Indian encampments, in the hope of converting the aborigines to the Christian faith, gazed with admiration on the nearer hills and the more distant peaks, and gave to them the natural and appropriate name, the Green mountains. We use the English phrase for the mountains, but the French term is preserved in the name of the State, Vermont - Verd Mont - thanks to Dr. Thomas Young of Philadelphia, at whose suggestion the name was given. And they are the green mountains in very truth, with the verdure of meadow and pasture land on their lower slopes, and the verdure of deciduous trees and evergreen forests on their higher slopes and summits. This mountain barrier, taking toll of the moisture-laden clouds that )ass over its summits from the ocean, keeps this highland region well watered and its verdure fresh and beautiful. The Green mountains - how much this name suggests to the weary toiler in the noisy, grimy city! The very name comes to the hot and stifling atmosphere of a great metropolis with an alluring sound. It suggests the green that means the abundant bounty and varied charm of nature; the green of upland meadows, the green of the forests, stretching far away over the slopes of the everlasting hills; the green that denotes life and promotes life and health. It suggests beautiful drives through shaded ways, beside which mountain streams go laughing and singing down to the valleys, over moss-covered rocks and shining pebbles, here becoming a cascade wreathed with mist, there an angry torrent, then spreading out into a wide and placid basin between green meadows. Book Description
Excerpt from Vermont, Vol. 1: The Green Mountain State Measured in terms of square miles, or in tables of population, Vermont is a small State, containing an area of less than ten thousand square miles; but if notable deeds accomplished may be taken as a standard, then the Green Mountain Commonwealth ranks among the really great States of the American Union. The story of Vermont is a marvelous one, filled with perils and sacrifices, heroic deeds and stirring adventures. Great men laid the foundations of the State, great men have builded thereon, and their achievements have given Vermont a name that is honored Wherever it is known. Because history is truth, it is often stranger than fiction, and sometimes it is more romantic. Like other mountain States, Vermont has been inhabited by a people in whose hearts a passionate love of liberty has been cherished. First among American States to forbid human slavery, Vermont always has stood for freedom under the law. Never a crown colony, never yielding allegiance to any province, State or kingdom, the little band of bold and resourceful pioneers, dwelling in the shadow of the Green Moun tains, set up a republic and successfully maintained an independent government for thirteen years, until Ver mont was admitted as the first State to be added to the Union. Book Description
Excerpt from The Green Mountain Boys: A Historical Tale of the Early Settlement of Vermont The following pages are intended to embody and illus trate a portion of the more romantic incidents Which actually occurred in the early settlements of Vermont, With the use of but little more fiction, than was deemed sufficient to weave them together, and impart to the tissue a connected interest. In doing this, the author has ventured, for the sake of more unity of design, upon one or two anachronisms; or, in other words he has brought together, or nearly so, some incidents connected With the portions of the two difierent periods em braced in the work, Viz., the New York controversy and I the Revolution - Which occurred at intervals. Other than this, he is sensible of no violations of historical truth. With out consulting, as perhaps he should, the models to be found in the works of approved writers in this department of litera ture, he has endeavored to give a true delineation of the man ners and feelings of those among Whom the scene is laid, to gether With the deeds and characters of some of the leading actors in the events he has attempted to describe, as gathered from the imperfect published histories of the times, from the private papers to Which he has had access and more partien larly from the lips of the few aged relics of that period Who actively participated in the Wild and stirring scenes Which peculiarly marked the settlement of this part of the country. How far he has succeeded in the attempt it is for the public. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
