Book Description
Vasishtha Shiksha is an ancient manual of the Sanskrit alphabet, written by a celebrated sage, and completely lost to the world, but for one handwritten manuscript in Tirupati, India. Here is the revival of this comprehensive knowledge of pronunciation of Sanskrit. Systematic and concise, there are chapters on the 1) The letters of the Alphabet; 2) The places of articulation in the mouth of the different letters; 3) The degrees of contact of the different classes of letters, vowels, consonants, etc.; 4) Voiced and unvoiced letters, aspirated and unaspirated letters, and the duration of different letters; 5) The rules of the application of Vedic pitch accents in letters, words, and verses; and 6) The organs of articulation for the different letters. Authoritative and complete, the original Sanskrit text is presented with an English translation, and an extensive commentary to clarify and make accessible all the fine details of this ancient science of pronunciation. A pervading theme of the ancient Vedic system of education, Shiksha, is to provide total knowledge and complete enlightenment to the student in the first lesson. The wise founders of the various recensions of Vedic recitation wrote treatises on the alphabet in order put every student on the path to complete unfoldment of his infinite inner potential. Vasishtha's alphabet primer is also a manual for enlightenment, unfolding the seven states of consciousness, and expounding the complete integration of life in unity consciousness. The commentary makes this undercurrent explicit and connects these two themes, the physical details of pronunciation and the program of education for enlightenment. This brings into focus the goal of Vasishtha's teaching presented in his final chapter, how by learning and reciting Sanskrit, one achieves the aim of the study of Shiksha, outer worldly fame, and inner life of eternal bliss in Brahman consciousness. Here is a modern revival of the ancient teaching of perfection in life through education.

Book Description
Paniniya Shiksha is the most popular and well-known among the 72 Shiksha texts in Vedic Literature. It is a general manual of Sanskrit pronunciation applicable to all the four Vedas. Clear, concise and comprehensive, it teaches the 64 letters of the alphabet, and covers all the five major divisions of Vedic phonology, pitch, duration, place of articulation, effort or mode of articulation and phonation. This monograph provides a translation and a detailed analysis of the position of Panini's work in the field of Vedic phonology, and in Vedic Literature as a whole. To help the reader follow the logic of the text, a commentary is provided explaining how each verse follows from its previous verse, and how each verse fits into the overall theme of unfoldment of knowledge. The goal of Paniniya Shiksha is to refine the physiology and gain enlightenment through recitation of the Vedic texts with proper pronunciation. This is the program of Vedic education, the standard system of education in ancient India. This broader context of the unfoldment of the full latent potential of the student through Vedic education must be understood in order to fully appreciate the great contribution of Panini in the field of Vedic phonology. The analysis of the broader context of this Shiksha work, shows it to be a proper foundation and starting point for study in all the various disciplines of Vedic science: The origin of speech, described by Panini, is the fountainhead of all knowledge, the wellsprings from which the whole breadth and depth of Vedic Literature find their source and sustenance. Panini lived thousands of years ago, but he has made a lasting contribution to the understanding of the dynamics of integration of life through refinement of speech, through perfecting the pronunciation of the Sanskrit language. Paniniya Shiksha is a manual for correct pronunciation, but it is also a guidebook to complete fulfillment in life through Vedic recitation.

Book Description
The Hamburg Atreya Shiksha Codex is a palm leaf bundle containing 36 Shiksha texts. Written in the grantha script with a strong and consistent hand, and preserved in the Staats- und Universitaetsbibliothek Hamburg, it is a well-curated collection of texts on Vedic phonology from the Taittiriya recension of Krishna Yajur Veda. The complete collection of texts is presented here in the Devanagari script, with an extensive introduction, describing the topics and themes of each text. The Atreya Shiksha is the most famous text in this bundle, discovered by Parameshwara Aithal and described for the first time in his Descriptive Bibliography of Veda Lakshana texts. Together with Pari Shiksha, the Atreya Shiksha presents the details of the varnakrama, or letter-by-letter recitation of the Vedic text. There are altogether 9 texts in this collection named after great seers of ancient times, Atreya, Bharadvaja, Kauhaliya, Lakshmikanta, Paniniya, Pari, Vasishtha, Vyasa and Shambhu. There are seven texts named Shiksha which bring out specific details of Vedic phonology, Aranya Shiksha, Kalanirnaya Shiksha, Sarvasammata Shiksha, Sarvasammata Shiksha Savyakhya, Siddhanta Shiksha, Yohi Prapti Shiksha, and Yohi Bhashya. There are texts which teach the details of Jata and the vikriti modes of recitation, Jatamani, Jatamani Vyakhyanam, Jatavalli and Trikrama Lakshanam. There are four texts teaching the fine points of Vedic accents, Svara Panchashat, Svara Samparki Savyakhyana, Svaravadhana Lakshanam and Uccodarki Lakshana Vyakhya. There are five Baith texts devoted to counting the occurrence of specific features in the Vedic texts, Ravana Baith, Ravana Baith paribhasha, Narada Baith, Narada Baith Vyakhya and Vaidyanatha Baith. There are seven texts devoted to fine points of pronunciation, Antanirdesham, Aruna Shamanam, Pranava Vichara, Shadvimshati Sutra, Shakha Shamana, Visarjaniya Lakshanam and Yamapatti. More than half of the 36 texts presented here have not been published before. The scribe, Cakra, son of Rama Aiyyangar of Uruttiti, who originally wrote the palm leaves perhaps 150 years ago, has collected together the broadest, most comprehensive collection of Shiksha texts available in the world today. The texts in this codex compass both the depth and breadth of insight of the ancient seers of Vedic phonology

Book Description
Vasishtha teaches the young boy Rama, the future king of Ayodhya, through stories. Here is the story where Vasishtha explains Yogic Flying. In this true story from the ancient past, King Shikhidhvaja and Queen Chudala are a perfect couple, deeply in love, enjoying the comforts and diversions of royal life together. As they get older and realize that life is fleeting, they turn to meditation. Queen Chudala has great success and gains enlightenment, a state of complete inner and outer fulfillment. But she is unable to convince her husband of the worth of her accomplishment. So she learns Yogic Flying in order to be able to demonstrate her mastery of natural law to her husband. At this point, Rama wants to know what this Yogic Flying is. Vasishtha launches into a 220 verse exposition of the mechanics of Yogic Flying, its stages of development, and its purpose: This is the most comprehensive description of Yogic Flying available in the Vedic Literature. Vasishtha devotes one chapter to explaining the theory and practice of Yogic Flying, and then three chapters on the three stages of Yogic Flying. The first stage is lifting off the ground in short hops; the second stage is marked when the flyer remains in the air, floating; and the third stage is demonstrated by the ability to fly anywhere at will. Special attention is given to the liftoff. The moment of liftoff demonstrates supreme mind-body coordination and gives a glimpse into the world of mastery of total natural law. Even the rank beginners in the practice of Yogic Flying, lifting off the ground in short hops, can have a dramatic influence on the collective consciousness of the whole society, Vasishtha says.In the context of explaining Yogic Flying, Vasishtha teaches Rama the whole story of health and disease. The cause of all disease, Vasishtha explains, is restricted awareness, the inability to grasp the total picture of reality. The cure for this mistake of the intellect, the cure for this ignorant perception of reality according to Vasishtha, is the experience of the total potential of natural law at the moment of liftoff in Yogic Flying. Thus Yogic Flying according to the Yoga Vasishtha is the supreme technology for creating perfect health. These chapters, called Yogasara in the literature, contain the essence of the knowledge of Yoga. This is the core teaching of Yoga in the Yoga Vasishtha.
