Book Description
Excerpt from Various Forms of Hysterical or Functional Paralysis The nucleus of this little book was published last year in the Lancet in the form of four lectures. The records of several new cases have now been incorporated, and the discussion of the subject has, in reference to some points, been still further developed. I have also added three Appendices dealing with the scientific foundations upon the basis of which, together with careful clinical observation, the views here expressed have been gradually built up. My best thanks are due to those House Physicians and Clinical Clerks at the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic, and at University College Hospital, who have aided me by their excellent reports of the majority of the cases here recorded. These reports have been only slightly re-shaped and somewhat condensed. The names of my assistants and fellow-workers have in each instance been added to the cases which we have studied together. In order that such records may be of real use they should, in my opinion, be reported in considerable detail, and not in the mere outlines which are so commonly employed for the reports of " hysterical " cases. Book Description
Hysteria is probably the condition which best illustrates the tight connection between neurology and psychiatry. While it has been known since antiquity, its renewed studies during the 19th century were mainly due to the work of Jean-Martin Charcot and his school in Paris. This publication focuses on these early developments, in which immediate followers of Charcot, including Babinski, Freud, Janet, Richer, and Gilles de la Tourette were involved. Hysteria is commonly considered as a condition that often leads to spectacular manifestations (e.g. convulsions, palsies), although both structural and functional imaging data confirm the absence of consistent and reproducible structural lesions. While numerous hypotheses have tried to explain the occurrence of this striking phenomenon, the precise nosology and pathophysiology of hysteria remain elusive. This volume offers an enthralling and informative read for neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists, as well as for general physicians, historians, and everyone interested in the developments of one of the most intriguing conditions in medicine.
