Book Description
SEE like an artist, and draw like a pro! If you think you can't draw, it's all in your head. Every time you pick up a pencil, a battle rages between the two sides of your brain: Your analytical brain, which wants to generalize and take shortcuts; and your visual brain, which sees it like it is. This innovative guide helps the "good guy" always win! Following the success of his first book, Painting with Your Artist's Brain (North Light Books), Carl Purcell shows that the secret to creating true-to-life renderings—and overcoming the most common drawing problems—is silencing your bossy logical nature and letting your artistic side do what it does best. Thirteen interactive exercises and 10 step-by-step demonstrations lead you on an in-depth exploration of essential drawing skills: seeing values correctly searching for relationships of angle, size and position defining form with line and edge exploring the relationship between objects and space tying everything together with value patterns making the most of your sketchbook You'll take the same observation-based approach whether you're drawing a pear, a portrait or a landscape. No subject will be beyond your reach, and you'll be amazed at your sudden mastery of drawing!

Book Description
Bruges painting of the second half of the sixteenth century has long been something of a unknown quantity. The oeuvres of Lancelot Blondeel and Pieter Pourbus may be known but the work of their fellow-painters in Bruges has received scant attention. However, recent scholarly and scientific study of those forgotten masters has greatly advance our knowledge of them. Today, not only do we have a better insight into the work of Pourbus and Blondeel, we can also introduce you to their artistic descendants with the oeuvres of several generations of the Claeissens family and of Marcus Gerards. They were all renowned masters producing works of the utmost quality that secured their high status in the art market. This book provides a necessary update of Bruges art history and place many long-held assumptions in a new light.

Book Description
John Blockley was one of Britain's most outstanding watercolour and pastel painters of the late 20th century, and has exhibited at the Royal Academy. Self-taught, he produced work that has always been experimental and progressive. His highly textured style was well ahead of his time and still hugely influential now. The quality of his work is even more staggering given that he never trained at any art college, and spent most of his working life as an engineer. He only started painting full time at the age of 52. His obsession for drawing and painting, even while a successful engineer, was driven by his search for the essence of his subjects. The power of his paintings reveal that passion. This beautiful retrospective of his work, including drawings, watercolours, pastels and also acrylics, brings together the best of his work. The illuminating commentary on his work is from his daughter, Ann Blockley, who is also an acclaimed painter in her own right. She understands completely where John Blockley was coming from in his artistic vision and also explains the techniques he used. Breaking with so many traditions in watercolour painting in the 1960s, John was and is an influential figure in the art world. John said, 'In order to paint the terrain as I see it – blotched, mottled, grainy – I must experiment'. These experimentations are still of huge value to painters today. This book is perfect for any painter who enjoys John's work but also for all the many, many fans of his work.

Book Description
This publication is a monograph on the Antwerp artist, whose surviving oeuvre dates from the mid-1620s to the 1650s. A prolific master whose known paintings number over one hundred, Schut achieved considerable succes during his lifetime. This study sets Schut's life and career within the context of the artistic and cultural milieu of his time, defining his role in the emergence of a new style after the death of Rubens in 1640, and considers his impact on future generations. A workable chronology for Schut's paintings is established through an analysis of style, iconography and patronage, taking into account past scholarship. The artists's working methods and studio practices and his output in other media are also discussed. A separate chapter is devoted to the numerous graland pictures he executed in collaboration with the Jesuit flower painter Daniel Seghers. A complete catalogue raisonne of Schut's paintings, the first of its kind, is presented.
