Book Description
Age is a complex cross-cutting notion for at least two reasons: the intricate interweaving of its biological and socio-cultural meanings and its dual significance as both a benchmark in an individual's life course and a foundation for social structure. This book offers new perspectives on age and ageing by combining achievements in the biological sciences and their different applications and interpretations in demography, anthropology, psychology and other pertinent disciplines. Thirty contributors from these various fields revisit the measures and the biological models of ageing, the borderline between normal and pathological ageing, the pertinence of chronological age as a benchmark along the life course, its interrelations with psychological development, with reproductive phases and other life events, the «normalizing» role ascribed by age classes and the risk of falling into ageism, the cross-cultural diversity and temporal changes of its meanings, the gender divide (real and perceived), as well as the rights that should be enjoyed at each age.

Book Description
Redresses the balance on the human and cultural aspects of the idea of being Basque in the modern world. Everyday nationalism, the human and cultural aspects of identity, is a neglected subject in the literature on nationalism in Europe. Jeremy MacClancy redresses the balance in this unusual and sharp book on the human and cultural aspects of the idea of being Basque in the modern world. The style is fresh and colloquial, dealing with several of the kinds of issues that usually appear in popular magazines - cuisine, football, art and graffiti - but the treatment is serious and illustrative of underlying currents in social life. MacClancy argues that the ethnographic understanding of nationalisms, rather than the orthodox studies of ideology, political parties, social classesand centre-periphery clashes - offers a more nuanced comprehension of the lived reality of people in areas where nationalism is a significant force. This is very much nationalism from the bottom up. JEREMY MACCLANCY is Professor of Social Anthropology at Oxford Brookes University Series editors: Wendy James & Nick Allen

Book Description
This book details the biology and sociology of ethnicity, showing how the two factors influence each other. The book first introduces the history of the concept of "ethnicity" and discusses recent uses of the term in social anthropology. The view that ethnic groups are biological entities, which pervades most academic disciplines, is contrasted to the current social anthropological idea that ethnic groups are self-defined social creations. Social decisions and actions by ethnic groups are shown to have significant biological effects, as exemplified by genetic and epidemiological data. The book includes an in-depth case study of the Basque people and shows the relevance of social and biological criteria for identifying ethnic membership. Researchers and students in sociobiology, human psychology, and social and biological anthropology will want to read this important new work.
