Book Description
Upgrading Waste for Feeds and Food considers how wasted or underutilized nutrients could be recovered and upgraded in order to make more food available, either directly or through animal intermediaries. This book assesses what progress had already been made in seeking a solution to the problem of large quantities of food being wasted. The topics discussed include the world outlook for food, sources of food waste, and recovery and utilization of protein from slaughterhouse effluents by chemical precipitation. The silage production, use of microbiological agents in upgrading waste for feed and food, and underutilized proteins for beverages are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the crude pectate gelling agents in heat processed foods and utilization of food wastes as raw material in the pet-food industry. This publication is a good source for agriculturists, nutritionists, and food technologists concerned with recovering wasted food.

Food Waste to Animal Feed
Author: Michael L. Westendorf
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470290099
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 298
Book Description
The magnitude of the food-waste disposal problem cannot be understated. Utilisation of food waste is of concern to the food processing industry, consumers, environmentalists, and regulators of handling and disposal systems. Food waste is not consistent in quality, is usually high in moisture content, and is only available locally. This book focuses on the challenges of utilising both wet and/or processed food waste. The regulatory environment relating to food waste, the perspective of the end-users, and practical use as animal feed is also discussed. One of the goals of this publication, other than to give a clear explanation of the subject of food waste and its uses as animal feed, is to stimulate a need for research.

Food Processing Waste and Utilization
Author: Sanju Bala Dhull
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000774023
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 381
Book Description
Because of its high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and sheer volume, waste from food processing has significant potential to pollute land, water, and air. Both environmentally and economically, it is important to properly treat food processing wastes including the recovery of valuable products. Food Processing Waste and Utilization: Tackling Pollution and Enhancing Product Recovery discusses possible solutions to tackle food waste generation and its further utilization. It addresses process engineering economics, microbiology of waste recycling, biochemical and nutritional aspects of food waste processing. The book includes detailed guidance and case studies about utilization/valorization of food waste. Key Features Covers modern as well as conventional methods of food industry waste utilization Discusses possible solutions to tackle food waste generation and its further utilization Addresses socioeconomic considerations, environmental concerns and discusses regulations related to food processing waste Authors of this book are well-recognized researchers in their specific fields who have made important contributions to the knowledge of utilization of different food industry wastes at different levels. This book covers a wide range of breakthroughs in waste management, and is of value for students, research scholars, postdoctoral fellows and faculties pursuing careers in fields such as Bioprocess Technology, Food Technology, Food Science and Technology, Food Biotechnology, and Fermentation and Bioengineering.

Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 407
Book Description
For a long time, lactic acid bacteria have played an indispensable role in food production. This book provides an overview and recent findings on their genetics and biochemistry as well as possible applications. The development and use of non-pathogenic lactic acid bacteria in vaccine delivery systems for mucosal immunizations are discussed. Their role in food fermentation, their use in carbohydrate modification and key systems for proteolysis and lantibiotic production are treated in detail. Further, the transformation of organic wastes into food and fertilizers is covered. The volume contains a wealth of useful information and can serve both as an introduction to the field for beginners and as a reference book.

Book Description
When I undertook the production of the First Edition of this book it was my first foray into the world of book editing, and I had no idea of what I was undertaking! I was not entirely alone in this, as in asking me to produce such a book the commissioning Editor, Mr George Olley of Elsevier Ap plied Science Publishers, had pictured a text of perhaps 300 pages, but on seeing my list of chapter titles realized that we were talking about a - chapter, two-volume work. We eventually decided to go ahead with it, and the result was more successful than either of us had dared to hope could be It was therefore with rather mixed emotions that I contemplated the case. a second edition at the suggestion of Blackie Press, who had taken over the title from Elsevier. On the one hand, I was naturally flattered that the book was considered important enough to justify a second edition. On the other hand, I was very well aware that the task would be even greater this time.
