Excerpt from The United States National Museum: Annual Report for the Year Ended June 30, 1957 Planning by the Museum staff for the interior of the new Museum Of History and Technology proceeded uninterruptedly through the year, and the design of its halls and exhibits constituted a large part Of the work of the exhibits staff. John C. Ewers, ethnologist and planning Officer, is directing this work, in which the curators and exhibits designers, working together, thus far have produced detailed descriptions and tentative hall de signs for nearly half the exhibition halls the building will contain. Thus, as soon as the dimensions and locations Of exhibition halls are determined by the architects, construction of the exhibits can begin, SO that they will be ready for installation soon after the building is completed. John H. Morrissey, now chief Of an architectural unit of the Public Buildings Service of the General Services Administra tion, has been a helpful liaison between that agency and the Smith sonian Institution on the design of the new building and a valued adviser on the planning of exhibits. Excerpt from The United States National Museum Annual Report for the Year Ended June 30, 1953 Our National Museum serves many purposes. In it, Objects of natural science and treasures of history and technology are preserved for posterity. Through critical study Of its collections and the data relevant to them the scope Of human knowledge is enlarged. From the exhibition of its collections the visiting public receives information and intellectual stimulation. All these activities - the amassing, the preserving, the documenting, the study, and the exhibiting Of its collections - require not only constant work and attention but also financial support. Lack Of adequate funds for exhibits over a period of many years has forced the United States National Museum to leave many of its public halls long unchanged, despite the awareness Of its staff that newer and better methods of exhibition would greatly improve them. The Congress has now made appropriations permitting us to start some modernization of these exhibition halls. To this improvement in our service to the public the Museum staff is turning a very considerable part Of its thinking and effort. As we commence this long-range undertaking it seems worthwhile to discuss its goals in terms of the mission Of the Smithsonian Institution to increase and diffuse knowledge among men.
