Book Description
Standard invoice book used as an album to contain collection of newspaper clippings dated Feb. 1912-May 1913, documenting the life and death of the weekly municipal newspaper, the Los Angeles municipal news. Clippings begin with the announcement of the appointment of Robert E. Rinehart of Sacramento as general manager and editor of the Municipal news, a new full-size weekly newspaper to be published in Los Angeles every Friday, eight pages long, and costing 52 cents a year, the first of its kind attempted in the United States. Clippings cover all subjects dealing with the newspaper, including a contest for design of the masthead, awarding of printing contracts, hiring of reporters, authorization by the city council of funds for purchase of a press for the Municipal news, advertising revenues, and other stories chronicling the philosophy, progress, and problems of the paper. Clippings from April-May 1913 record the demise of the paper. Residents of the city voted to suspended the publication of the newspaper after 32 weekly issues due to financial losses. Clippings have been collected from a wide variety of California newspapers such as the Los Angeles examiner, Los Angeles news, Los Angeles times, Los Angeles herald, Los Angeles record, Hollywood citizen, San Pedro news, San Pedro pilot, Pacific printer of San Francisco, Bishop (Calif.) herald, Palo Alto times, Ocean Park (Calif.) journal, Glendale news, Redondo (Calif.) reflex, Long Beach (Calif.) press, Bakersfield (Calif.) echo, as well as newspapers from Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maine, Virginia, and Arizona. Also included are clippings in French from Paris newspapers such as Gazette de France, Le temps, and Revue des arts graphiques.

Book Description
In recent decades, turnout in US presidential elections has soared, education levels have hit historic highs, and the internet has made information more accessible than ever. Yet over that same period, Americans have grown less engaged with local politics and elections. Drawing on detailed analysis of fifteen years of reporting in over 200 local newspapers, along with election returns, surveys, and interviews with journalists, this study shows that the demise of local journalism has played a key role in the decline of civic engagement. As struggling newspapers have slashed staff, they have dramatically cut their coverage of mayors, city halls, school boards, county commissions, and virtually every aspect of local government. In turn, fewer Americans now know who their local elected officials are, and turnout in local elections has plummeted. To reverse this trend and preserve democratic accountability in our communities, the local news industry must be reinvigorated – and soon.
