Book Description
Excerpt from Exits From the Pearly Gates Many of my poems were written 50 years ago, some 25 to 30, others more recent and they seem to mark my evolution of soul as light came through upon my open Windows. The history of my poems would make a large vol ume, and, to me, the history of our poems, national songs especially, is as dear as the poems themselves. In my poetical writings I have endeavored as much to bring out certain ideas that came to me as I have to cling to poetical laws and privileges. For Ex. In In These Happy Golden Days I sought to make it clear that all days are Happy Golden Days from expectant motherhood to old age. In A Welcome to Spring I bring out the signs of spring in think, see, feel, hear, know. In What Is God? I have grouped the symbols so as to show the ascendencies of the manifestations of God. (life) In The Beyond and A Light Divine I give my experiences in seeing through the Law that awakens the soul. I put the poem Spring in because of the youth of the writer, Byron Beach, and the love I had for him as a pupil of mine 25 years ago. I feel that it has never been printed. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sovereign in the Street, and Other Poems From a castle of thoughts that my conscience was building I studied a man who was cutting a street, While the round rolling sun was demeaning and gilding Him thinking and ripping the ditch at his feet. Of this native of grief, as he shoveled the furrow, I write, be the subject a poem or not; For as deep did he burrow, my love traveled thorough And writes, be the truth of it rubies or rot. Oh, 'tis weird that the truth, like a corpse on the floor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Return of the Guards and Other Poems These Poems of mine were given to the world, in their latest form, shortly before I was elected to the Poetry Professorship at Oxford - that is a good many years ago. They have long been quite out of print; but, as they had answered their purpose, I let them be. For some time past, however, I have been told by different persons, in various ways, that a new edition of them would be welcomed by that subdivision of the human race which interests itself in Poetry at present. I have, therefore, made arrangements for their republication. Since I ceased to be Poetry Professor, I have not had much to do with literary pursuits. The circumstances of my life have left me without ambition, and without much interest in any thing but my family, my friends, and my country, of whose future I try not to despair.
