Excerpt from Deep Oil Possibilities of the Illinois Basin Three billion barrels of oil havebeen produced from the Illinois Basin since oil was discovered at shallow depths on the basin margins in 1888. The productive rocks range in age from Middle Ordovician to Pennsylvanian. About 115, 000 wells have been drilled to find and produce this oil, but exploration has touched less than half of the sedimentary rocks of the basin. Considering only the area of 41, 000 square miles in which the Galena is more than 1, 000 feet below sea level and which has produced more than 99 percent 'of the basin' 3 oil, the Galena and younger formations contain about 32, 000 cubic miles of sediment, as opposed to an estimated 44, 000 cubic miles for the older formations. If the entire Middle Ordovician is included with the younger sequence, the volume of the upper unit is expanded to cubic miles, whereas the Lower Ordovician and Cambrian rocks occupy 38, 400 cubic miles. Less than 8 inches of exploratory hole have been drilled per cubic mile of the Lower Ordovician and Cambrian. This report summarizes current knowledge on stratigraphy and oil possibilities of these deeply buried rocks in the Illinois part of the basin. Although the Illinois area is of primary concern, the report, by necessity, is based upon a projection of thickness and lithologic trends from the adjacent regions, supplemented by the few deep tests. The major publications concerned with the stratigraphy of the region are listed at the end of the report. The geological Situation with regard to the possibilities Of Obtaining oil by deeper drilling in Illinois was reviewed by the Illinois Geological Survey in an article published in the early part of Since that time 16 wells have been drilled in Illinois to test for Oil in the St. Peter or deeper formations. Thirteen Of these wells tested below the St. Peter and two reached the basement rocks. These tests were at scattered locations along the west side Of Illinois from Madi son to Hancock counties and in central to northern Illinois from Douglas to Lee counties. NO oil was Obtained but it may be Of value to summarize for the benefit Of further prospecting the geologic information now available. Excerpt from Illinois Oil Shales The investigation indicates that the oil shales are more likely to be of future significance than of immediate commercial importance. For many years attention has been directed to oil shales, especially those in Colorado, as potential sources of petroleum. The recent announce ment that the Union Oil Company is erecting a retort near Rifle, Colo., for the processing of an oil shale averaging 30 gallons per ton of recoverable shale oil (oil and Gas Jour., 1955) indicates the increasing significance of oil shales in areas affording a combination of suitable resources and favorable economic conditions. Certain Illinois shales have been known for some time to contain oil (worthen, 1870, p. 105; Ashley, 1917, p. 314 and 319; Winchester, 1919, p. 51; Barrett, 1922; Cox, 1914, p. 26 However, only a relatively few shales were tested, and the resulting data were incomplete or not comparable with current analytical data.
