I wrote this book to prove to Americans that no matter what their economists and politicians tell them, America is in serious economic decline. What makes the position troubling is that American conventional economics lack a scientific understanding of the structure of the US economy and therefore unable to proffer solutions to the country's growing problems. I have shown how US economic analysis know-how has instead over time degenerated more and more into finance with the unfortunate growing influence of the US Federal Reserve in the US economy. I have shown that in economic science, economic finance is a bubble. I also showed in consequence and unknown to many people how Wall Street constitutes the largest cause of the present structural imbalance and uncompetitivenes of the US economy. "The End of the American Empire" is not intended to be a book that specifically tells how to restore America's largely broken economy, but it is a warning on the country's growing impending collapse. The book is written in as simple everyday language as possible to enable ordinary Americans to understand the depth of the economic crisis and raise their voices to policymakers in Washington to act urgently.

Why is the United States unable to compete effectively with Japan? What explains the inability of American political leaders to devise an industrial policy capable of focusing the energies of American business on the task of meeting the Japanese challenge? How can America emerge from the shadow of the Rising Sun? This book addresses these questions and proposes a controversial decision. To get at the political roots of American economic decline, businessman-scholar William Dietrich puts the disciplined thinking of political philosophy, comparative politics, and international political economy to effective use in analyzing the source and nature of American institutional weakness. Unlike many who have written on U.S.-Japanese relations, Dietrich does not seek a solution a particular new policy or institutional innovation, such as an American counterpart to Japan's MITI. Rather, he emphasizes the systemic nature of America's problems. They continue in the path of increasingly squeezing labor out of production in the name of productivity in order to reinforce the supremacy of finance. These are the basic errors of capitalism. There is the belief that the sum total of the rowdyism of private enterprise creates maximum economic growth and prosperity for all. In the context of capitalism, conventional economists equate capital invested in US dollars as the measure of US economic growth achieved through financial management.
