Book Description
During the 1970s ultrasonography developed along different paths in continental Eu rope and the English-speaking world. Whereas static imaging dominated the United Kingdom and North America, real-time examination performed by physicians was the norm in the Federal Republic of Germany and France. Francis Weill was uniquely able to bridge the gap between the two schools since he employed both techniques extensively. He made many important contributions to ab dominal ultrasonography during that decade, including the first descriptions of peri pancreatic vascular anatomy, the sonographic diagnostic features of obstructive jaun dice, and the localization of intraperitoneal fluid collections. During the past 20 years he has been working on an evolving textbook of gastroin testinal ultrasonography. This edition in English is the latest fruit of that effort. There are many textbooks of ultrasonography but very few are the work of a single author with a systematic, consistent, and thoroughly organized approach. Moreover, a work that has been crafted and refined by 20 years of clinical experience is certainly unique in this field. My relationship to this book began with the first English edition which I helped to translate from French. The current volume is a revised version of the most recent French edition, a book that we have found to be an invaluable reference in our de partment of radiological ultrasound for anyone who can manage a bit of French. Book Description
Endoscopic ultrasound has revolutionized the approach to lesions inside and outside the gastrointestinal tract. It has opened the door for gastroenterologists to explore organs outside of the GI lumen, such as the lymph nodes, lung, pancreas, and liver. Endoscopic Ultrasound covers all aspects of endoscopic ultrasound, from the basics to the interventional indications. Richly detailed chapters describe the utility of EUS in different parts of the body and are organized based on body site Pioneers in the field summarize new studies, and the direction of EUS in practice. Endoscopic Ultrasound provides a ready reference that will help physicians and support staff that are beginning EUS, as well as trained ultrasonographers who wish to arm themselves with a comprehensive reference and explore the future of the field.

This book is an introduction for students and young doctors at the beginning of their career in diagnostic ultrasonography. It also presents the latest in innovations and techniques in gastrointestinal ultrasonography. The reader will find basic aspects of ultrasonography as well as highly advanced technical and research papers. The first category will be easy to understand for most readers. The second category may require some preparation from the student. All advanced papers represent the frontiers of knowledge. The first few chapters deal with the basic principles of ultrasound and its use in tissue characterization. They are followed by chapters on the use of ultrasound for the characterization of tissue biomechanics and on novel techniques such as 3D ultrasound and hydrosonography. The clinical applications are outlined in the last few chapters of the book. Contents:Basic Technologies in Ultrasound (K Matre & P H Dahl)The Use of Ultrasound in Biomechanics (H Gregersen & K Matre)Ultrasonography of the Liver, Biliary System and Pancreas (O M Pedersen & S Ødegaard)Ultrasonographic Assessment of Esophageal Morphology and Function (S Ødegaard & H Gregersen)Assessment of the Layered Structure of the Gastrointestinal Tract (M B Kimmey & J H Hwang)Simultaneous Recordings of Gastric Motility by Ultrasound, Scintigraphy and Manometry (K Hveem & H Gregersen)Theurapeutic Potential and Consideration of High Intensity Ultrasound in Gastroenterology (R W Martin & J H Hwang)Strain Rate Imaging — A New Tool for Studying the GI Tract (A Heimdal & O H Gilja)Three-Dimensional Ultrasonography in Gastroentrology (O H Gilja & R W Martin)The EchoPac3D Software for 3D Image Analysis (D Martens & O H Gilja)Gastric Emptying and Duodeno-Gastric Reflux Assessed by Duplex Sonography (T Hausken & S Ødegaard)Hydrosonography of the Gastrointestinal Tract (G Folvik & T Hausken)Applications of Acoustic Microscopy in Gastroenterology (T Andersen & H Gregersen)Ultrasonographic Alterations in Functional Dyspepsia (A Berstad & O H Gilja)Endoscopic Ultrasonography in the Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Diseases with Special Reference to Tumor Staging (S Ødegaard & L B Nesje)Ultrasound in Patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (S Tefera & J Hatlebakk) Readership: Practitioners in gastroenterology, internal medicine, surgery and radiology; sonographers and engineers.
