A Systematic, Wide-field Search for Stars Associated with ALFALFA Ultra-compact High Velocity Clouds

Book Description
The Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey was a blind neutral hydrogen (HI) survey that scanned 7,000 square degrees of the sky with the Arecibo radio telescope and catalogued more than 30,000 objects. Among those objects are approximately 100 Ultra-Compact High Velocity Clouds (UCHVCs), which are HI clouds that have masses and velocities that suggest that they may reside in low-mass dark matter halos located in or around the Local Group. Crucially, the UCHVCs do not have any known optical counterparts and thus are ideal locations to search for stars associated with as-yet undetected nearby dwarf galaxies. This thesis is a continuation of an optical survey begun by our group. We observed 26 additional UCHVCs with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope, adding to the 23 that were analyzed in Janesh (2018). In addition to analyzing more UCHVCs, I made improvements to the stellar detection pipeline and incorporated additional interactive steps to ensure the accuracy of the results. I also added in a cross-matching routine using data from the Gaia mission and Sloan Digital Sky Survey to remove possible contaminants (e.g., foreground stars, unresolved background galaxies) from our photometry catalog and improve our ability to find genuine stars associated with the HI clouds. From the sample of UCHVCs we analyzed, we identified six dwarf galaxy candidates with absolute V-band magnitudes -2 to -8 and distances between 270 and 870 kpc. We compared the estimated optical properties of our most convincing candidate with predictions from theoretical simulations and a recent census of the Local Group and found them broadly consistent. We also investigated the possibility that one of the UCHVCs is a gas cloud associated with the Galactic globular cluster Pal 3. We identified two stellar overdensities with modest significance at similar distances to Pal 3 and near the HI source, but note that they would imply a much larger gas mass than one would expect to be associated with a globular cluster. Finally, we discussed the future observations and analysis that would be valuable for determining whether the identified stellar overdensities are true dwarf galaxies as well as highlight the dwarf galaxy discoveries expected from the Rubin Observatory.

We interpret this as evidence that the warm clouds have an ionized component not present with the cold clouds, possibly because they are part of the Galactic fountain.
