Book Description
The chapters in this volume were presented at the July–August 2008 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Unexploded Ordnance Detection and Mitigation. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glorious Tuscany region of northern Italy. For the ninth time we gathered at this idyllic spot to explore and extend the reciprocity between mathematics and engineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied scientists which occurred at our eight previous ASI’s continued at this meeting. The detection and neutralization of unexploded ordnance (UXO) has been of major concern for very many decades; at least since the First World war. UXO continues to be the subject of intensive research in many ?elds of science, incl- ing mathematics, signal processing (mainly radar and sonar) and chemistry. While today’s headlines emphasize the mayhem resulting from the placement of imp- vised explosive devices (IEDs), humanitarian landmine clearing continues to draw signi?cant global attention as well. In many countries of the world, landmines threaten the population and hinder reconstruction and fast, ef?cient utilization of large areas of the mined land in the aftermath of military con?icts.

Book Description
Unexploded ordnance (UXO) pose a persistent and expensive problem throughout the world; over 11 million acres are potentially contaminated in the U.S. alone. However, detection requires a very high degree of reliability, the false alarm rate is typically enormous, and cleanup costs are very high. This Tutorial Text addresses the unique challenges of UXO detection and the following topics: fundamental physics and phenomenology; new, successful modeling and analysis methods; the design, development, and testing of new instruments that provide expanded and superior data; innovative processing techniques; and highly successful discrimination performance in blind field tests at standardized sites. The book is written for lay scientists and engineers, as well as specialists in the field, requiring only some familiarity with basic vector calculus and matrix methods, common statistical concepts, and elementary physics.

Book Description
Over the past 2 years, several accounts of the casualties caused by antipersonnel landmines have brought to light the threat such munitions pose years after hostilities cease. The deaths and injuries attributed to these mines each year have been estimated to total about 30,000. Many of the victims are civilians, including children. While the contamination of land caused by landmines and other forms of unexploded ordnance (UXO) may appear to be primarily a Third World issue, closer examination suggests that the problem is shared by developed nations as well. As you requested, we assessed the extent to which ongoing or foreseeable technology efforts offer solutions to worldwide landmine and other UXO problems.

Book Description
This chapter presents an approach for explosive-landmine detection on-board an autonomous aerial drone. The chapter describes the design, implementation and integration of a ground penetrating radar (GPR) using a software defined radio (SDR) platform into the aerial drone. The chapter?s goal is first to tackle in detail the development of a custom-designed lightweight GPR by approaching interplay between hardware and software radio on an SDR platform. The SDR-based GPR system results on a much lighter sensing device compared against the conventional GPR systems found in the literature and with the capability of re-configuration in real-time for different landmines and terrains, with the capability of detecting landmines under terrains with different dielectric characteristics. Secondly, the chapter introduce the integration of the SDR-based GPR into an autonomous drone by describing the mechanical integration, communication system, the graphical user interface (GUI) together with the landmine detection and geo-mapping. This chapter approach completely the hardware and software implementation topics of the on-board GPR system given first a comprehensive background of the software-defined radar technology and second presenting the main features of the Tx and Rx modules. Additional details are presented related with the mechanical and functional integration of the GPR into the UAV system.

Book Description
This ARW is the third NATO-sponsored workshop on Explosives Detection and Humanitarian Demining. The previous events were • Detection and Destruction of Anti-Personnel Landmines Moscow, 1997 • Explosives Detection and Decontamination of the Environment Prague, 1997. Over the last decade applied research in Humanitarian Demining has made progress to some extend, but according to the tremendous tasks of Demining and the lack of scientific methods for practical detection of explosive devices, research activities are still of the same importance than ever before. Concerning countermeasures against terrorism the detection of explosives is one of the keyfactors, but the practical applications are not sufficient solved. An international exchange of research results are therefore urgent, to find out the most promising measures for application. The coincidence of this ARW and the terrible disaster of New York and Washington may demonstrate the importance of this task. In consequence the explosive device detection technologies can make a major contribution to collective, family and individual security. In developed countries, these technologies provide a strong deterrent and preventative measure against terrorist threats. In less developed regions, they can improve individual, institutional and state security, lessening the insecurity that motivates many terrorists acts. The elimination of landmine threats is just one of many ways of achieving this. However our attempts to meet the extremely difficult technical challenges posed by landmine and UXO contamination are inevitably leading us to new technological approaches.

Book Description
This comprehensive new resource analyzes sources of noise and clutter that magnetic sensing system developers encounter. This book guides practitioners in designing and building low noise and low power consumption magnetic measurement systems. Various examples of magnetic surveillance and survey systems are provided. This book enables system designers to obtain an all-inclusive spectral understanding of typical sources of noise and clutter present in the system and environment for each application, in order to successfully design stable and sensitive low power magnetic sensing devices. Detection and localization methods are explored, as well as deterministic and heuristics algorithms which are an integral part of any magnetic sensing system. This book is aimed to eliminate some of the "black magic" manipulations present during low noise magnetic measurements. The book meticulously describes, analyzes and quantifies the variables that affect low noise measurement systems. Readers are able to understand sources of measurements irregularities and how to effectively mitigate them. Moreover, this book also presents low power magnetometers and dedicated low noise sampling techniques.

Book Description
There is increasing need for dual-use or multiuse technology because of current and anticipated Department of Defense budget reductions. This report describes the use of a helicopter-mounted sensing and processing system, originally designed for remote minefield detection, as a tool for detecting unexploded ordnance at the terrain surface. Detection is based on the remote identification of surface anomalies and materials that may indicate the presence of explosive ordnance contamination. The use of airborne remote detection minimizes the risk to personnel during the environmental assessment and analysis of the site. The U.S. Army Engineer Division, Huntsville, requested the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) to use the airborne scanner system to detect surface unexploded ordnance (UXO) at the Black Hills Army Depot. The airborne scanner system used is based on the REmote Minefield Detection System (REMIDS). Huntsville Division personnel selected areas of interest based on suspected contamination at the depot, and the U.S. Army Aviation Technical Test Center (AATTC), Fort Rucker, provided aircraft support. WES personnel operated the airborne scanner and processed the data collected from the test flights to generate contamination maps of the areas of interest.
