Experiments have been carried out in plane and axisymmetric sudden-expansion flows to quantify velocity characteristics in isothermal and reacting flows and temperature and emission characteristics in the reacting flows, to establish flammability and stability limits, to determine the acoustic characteristics and their importance to large-amplitude oscillations and to examine the nature of extinction. Flow visualization and detailed measurements quantified the asymmetry of the plane flows and the extent to which it was removed by combustion. Longitudinal waves dominated the flows in both ducts for an extensive range of equivalence ratios and active control was successful in reducing amplitudes except where the frequencies were broad band as at higher equivalence ratios and close to flammability limits. Close to these limits, oscillations existed with frequencies much lower than those associated with acoustic or bulk-mode frequencies and with modulation rather than the single-frequency oscillations associated with equivalence ratios between around 0.75 and 1.2. Models of the combustor of a land-based gas turbine were examined, one with an annular main flow and a central pilot flow and the other with swirl stabilization. in the first arrangement, the movement of flame stabilization from the annular ring to the back step was important and, in the latter, the position of stabilization also moved but this time axially with increasing load so that the fixed position of the actuator for active control proved to be satisfactory for some load conditions and less so for others.

Turbulent reactive flows are of common occurrance in combustion engineering, chemical reactor technology and various types of engines producing power and thrust utilizing chemical and nuclear fuels. Pollutant formation and dispersion in the atmospheric environment and in rivers, lakes and ocean also involve interactions between turbulence, chemical reactivity and heat and mass transfer processes. Considerable advances have occurred over the past twenty years in the understanding, analysis, measurement, prediction and control of turbulent reactive flows. Two main contributors to such advances are improvements in instrumentation and spectacular growth in computation: hardware, sciences and skills and data processing software, each leading to developments in others. Turbulence presents several features that are situation-specific. Both for that reason and a number of others, it is yet difficult to visualize a so-called solution of the turbulence problem or even a generalized approach to the problem. It appears that recognition of patterns and structures in turbulent flow and their study based on considerations of stability, interactions, chaos and fractal character may be opening up an avenue of research that may be leading to a generalized approach to classification and analysis and, possibly, prediction of specific processes in the flowfield. Predictions for engineering use, on the other hand, can be foreseen for sometime to come to depend upon modeling of selected features of turbulence at various levels of sophistication dictated by perceived need and available capability.

The paper presents a numerical method for the solution of the conservation equations governing steady, reacting, turbulent viscous flow in two-dimensional geometries, in both Cartesian and axisymmetric coordinates. These equations are written in Favre-averaged form and closed with a first order model. A two-equation K-epsilon model, where low Reynolds number and compressibility effects are included, and a modified eddy-break up model are used to simulate fluid mechanics turbulence, chemistry and turbulence-combustion interaction. The solution is obtained by using a pseudo-unsteady method with improved perturbation propagation properties. The equations are discretized in space by using a finite volume formulation. An explicit multi-stage dissipative Runge-Kutta algorithm is then used to advance the flow equations in the pseudo-time. The method is applied to the computation of both diffusion and premixed turbulent reacting flows. The computed temperature distributions compare favorably with experimental data. Boretti, A. A. The first four symposia in the series on turbulent shear flows have been held alternately in the United States and Europe with the first and third being held at universities in eastern and western States, respectively. Continuing this pattern, the Fifth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was held at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in August 1985. The meeting brought together more than 250 participants from around the world to present the results of new research on turbulent shear flows. Nearly 100 formal papers and about 20 shorter communications in open forums were presented.
