Book Description
Tungsten fiber reinforced copper matrix (W/Cu) composites have served as an ideal model system with which to analyze the properties of metal matrix composites. A series of research programs were conducted to investigate the stress-strain behavior of W/Cu composites; the effect of fiber content on the strength, modulus, and conductivity of W/Cu composites; and the effect of alloying elements on the behavior of tungsten wire and of W/Cu composites. Later programs investigated the stress-rupture, creep, and impact behavior of these composites at elevated temperatures. Analysis of the results of these programs as allows prediction of the effects of fiber properties, matrix properties, and fiber content on the properties of W/Cu composites. These analyses form the basis for the rule-of-mixtures prediction of composite properties which was universally adopted as the criteria for measuring composite efficiency. In addition, the analyses allows extrapolation of potential properties of other metal matrix composites and are used to select candidate fibers and matrices for development of tungsten fiber reinforced superalloy composite materials for high temperature aircraft and rocket engine turbine applications. The W/Cu composite efforts are summarized, some of the results obtained are described, and an update is provided on more recent work using W/Cu composites as high strength, high thermal conductivity composite materials for high heat flux, elevated temperature applications. Book Description
The purpose of this investigation was to study the feasibility of producing fiber reinforced composites by vibratory compaction and liquid phase sintering. Tensile data for continuous fiber reinforced composites fabricated by this technique was in very good agreement with the rule-of- mixing. (Author, modified-PL).

Book Description
The effects of selected alloying elements on the elevated temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber reinforced composites were studied. Composites were made of copper, copper- 2 percent chromium and copper- 10 percent nickel reinforced with various volume percents of uniaxially oriented tungsten fibers. The composites were tested in tension at temperatures up to 1800 degrees F.A comparison of the elevated-temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber - copper alloy composites, representing soluble systems, was made with tungsten fiber - copper composites, representing a mutually insoluble system. The effects of alloying on the elevated-temperature tensile properties of tungsten fiber reinforced composites was also studied. A linear relation existed at elevated temperatures between tensile strength and volume percent fiber content for all the systems investigated. The copper alloy composites were weaker in tension at high volume percent fiber contents than copper composites in which alloying with the fiber did not occur. The tensile strength of the alloyed tungsten fiber decreased with increasing penetration of the alloying element into the tungsten fiber.

Book Description
Stress-rupture and tensile tests were conducted at 816 deg C (1500 deg F) to determine the effect of matrix composition on the minimum fiber length to diameter ratio (critical aspect ratio) below which fibers in a tungsten fiber/copper-nickel alloy matrix composite could not be stressed to their ultimate load carrying capability. This study was Intended to simulate some of the conditions that might be encountered with materials combinations used in high-temperature composites. The critical aspect ratio for stress-rupture was found to be greater than for short-time tension, and it increased as the time to rupture increased. The Increase was relatively slight, and calculated fiber lengths for long service appear to be well within practical size limits for effective reinforcement and ease of fabrication of potential gas turbine components.
