Book Description
This open access book presents research and evaluation results of the Austrian flagship project “Connecting Austria,” illustrating the wide range of research needs and questions that arise when semi-automated truck platooning is deployed in Austria. The work presented is introduced in the context of work in similar research areas around the world. This interdisciplinary research effort considers aspects of engineering, road-vehicle and infrastructure technologies, traffic management and optimization, traffic safety, and psychology, as well as potential economic effects. The book’s broad perspective means that readers interested in current and state-of-the-art methods and techniques for the realization of semi-automated driving and with either an engineering background or with a less technical background gain a comprehensive picture of this important subject. The contributors address many questions such as: Which maneuvers does a platoon typically have to carry out, and how? How can platoons be integrated seamlessly in the traffic flow without becoming an obstacle to individual road users? What trade-offs between system information (sensors, communication effort, etc.) and efficiency are realistic? How can intersections be passed by a platoon in an intelligent fashion? Consideration of diverse disciplines and highlighting their meaning for semi-automated truck platooning, together with the highlighting of necessary research and evaluation patterns to address such a broad task scientifically, makes Energy-Efficient and Semi-automated Truck Platooning a unique contribution with methods that can be extended and adapted beyond the geographical area of the research reported.

Book Description
This book discusses the latest advances in research and development, design, operation and analysis of transportation systems and their complementary infrastructures. It reports on both theories and case studies on road and rail, aviation and maritime transportation. Further, it covers a wealth of topics, from accident analysis, vehicle intelligent control, and human-error and safety issues to next-generation transportation systems, model-based design methods, simulation and training techniques, and many more. A special emphasis is placed on smart technologies and automation in transport, and on the user-centered, ergonomic and sustainable design of transport systems. The book, which is based on the AHFE 2019 International Conference on Human Factors in Transportation, held on July 24-28, 2019, in Washington D.C., USA, mainly addresses the needs of transportation system designers, industrial designers, human–computer interaction researchers, civil and control engineers, as well as vehicle system engineers. Moreover, it represents a timely source of information for transportation policy-makers and social scientists whose work involves traffic safety, management, and sustainability issues in transport.

Book Description
This report assesses how FHWA's investment in truck-platooning research affected truck platooning knowledge, the availability and quality of data, and the deployment of truck platooning technology. The research projects reviewed in this report are the "Partial Automation for Truck Platooning" (PATP) and "Driver-Assistive Truck Platooning" (DATP). The focus of the PATP and DATP projects was to decrease the costs of freight travel by improving fuel efficiency and highway mobility and allowing long-haul trucks to travel together as efficiently as possible. Although it was difficult to measure the effects of specific FHWA activities, the Research and Technology Evaluation project team found the research output from PATP and DATP addressed previously identified research gaps, influenced stakeholders' overall technology awareness and knowledge of truck-platooning technology, and led the way for follow-on research. All interviewees agreed the benefits outweighed the costs and all but one—who was unsure—had a positive impression of qualitative return on investment. Having project partners commit to cost sharing showed potential payback for project partners, while research output from the PATP and DATP projects showed that truck platooning was a viable option to help increase fuel efficiency among two- and three-truck platoons.

Book Description
Through this project, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) funded the creation of a comprehensive truck platooning demonstration in Texas, serving as a proactive effort in assessing innovative operational strategies to position TxDOT as a leader in this research area and the overall transportation systems management and operation using connected vehicle and automated vehicle initiatives. The focus was on the feasibility of deploying truck platoons with two or more vehicles on specific corridors in Texas within 5 to 10 years. The project brought together major partners, including government agencies, national labs, truck manufacturers and equipment suppliers, all of which have committed resources in terms of in-kind matching of equipment, engineering services, and intelllectual property.

Book Description
A cooperative truck platoon is a set of virtually linked trucks driving with a small intra-vehicle gap enabled by connected and automated vehicle technologies. One of the primary benefits of truck platooning is energy savings due to the reduction of aerodynamic drag on the platooned vehicles. The focus of this paper is on scheduling travel itineraries of a given set of trucks to maximize platooning opportunities and the corresponding energy savings. By constructing a time-expanded network, we formulate the problem as a minimum concave-cost network flow problem, and devise a number of solution methodologies to find the optimal or high-quality solutions. The solution methodologies include an outer approximation algorithm for solving a mixed-integer convex minimization reformulation of the problem, a dynamic-programming-based heuristic scalable to large-scale instances, and a fast approximation algorithm with guaranteed performance for a restrictive version of the problem. All the proposed algorithms are examined and benchmarked on medium to large networks under various test scenarios. The numerical results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods and their applicability in real-world settings.
