Book Description
Excerpt from Practical Trout Culture In the following pages we hope to present to our readers, as far as can be presented in a volume, the theory and practice of fish culture - the theory as we understand it, and the practice as we have performed it at our fish farm near Bloomsbury, N. J. This farm was purchased by us in August, 1867, of Mr. Thad deus Norris, a gentleman well-known both as an author and angler. The place was in an unfinished condition, but one pond had been erected and stocked with a few hundred sickly fishes. At first, our undertaking was anything but prosperous. Our stock fishes died by dozens; our spawn, from want of proper knowledge of the theory Of impregnation, and the sickly con dition of our parent fishes, perished by thousands. Musk rats bored their way through our improperly-constructed banks; a flood carried away thousands from our badly-located hatching house, and, finally, during our absence from home, some kind ih dividuuls relieved us Of a large number of our finest fishes. Book Description
Excerpt from Trout Culture: A Practical Treatise on the Art of Spawning, Hatching,& Rearing Trout In bringing out this little work on the Culture of Trout, the author feels that he is attempting to supply a great want, as many landed proprietors, desirous of stocking their waters with that fish, naturally wish for some simple practical work wherein they may find information which will serve for a help to the servant as well as to the master, especially in the absence of the latter. The author, in his first attempt at Pisciculture, would have been truly thankful for such a guide; and, with the hope that they may be of use to others, and enable them to enter upon a successful career, he now ventures to publish the results of his own practical experience. His grateful acknowledgments are due to the Rev. L. Stone for the account of the Russian or Dry method of Spawning, and for the Spawn and Hatching Tables, &c. All the methods of procedure recommended have been personally tried, and nothing has been taken from the works of others, so far as the author is aware, without due acknowledgment. Book Description
Excerpt from American Fish-Culture, Embracing All the Details of Artificial Breeding and Rearing of Trout: The Culture of Salmon, Shad, and Other Fishes It will be seen that I have quoted largely from the great amount of useful knowledge elicited by the enterprising Com missioners of Fisheries for the New England States. One of the reasons for laying such information before my readers is, that many interested persons outside of those states may not be able to avail themselves of the important facts which have been brought to light, as the reports alluded to are published only for their own citizens, or those who may apply for them to the Commissioners. As I have duly credited the various sources from which I have received information bearing on fish culture, I will make no further mention of them here, than acknowledge my indebtedness to Mr. Bertram's work, The Harvest of the Sea, and Mr. Francis's book on Fish Culture. Book Description
Excerpt from Coarse Fish Culture I am sure, gentlemen, nothing could be more satisfactory than this letter. As an enthusiastic angler for all kinds of fish, I should be the last to advocate the introduction of a fish which would Spoil our sport. Nor would I have anything to say for it if it were a fish like the trout, affording sport chie y to the rich but the black bass is essentially a poor man's fish it will take any kind of bait freely, affords superb sport, and thrives best in just those waters which are not suited to trout and salmon, viz., ponds, lakes, and slow, deep streams. Book Description
Excerpt from Care and Diseases of Trout The size of the raceways may vary widely, dependent on local conditions, but in all cases they should be much longer than wide and supplied with sufficient water to insure a good circulation. Un less there is an exceptionally large flow of water it is believed that the, raceways should be not over 3m 5 feet wide with a maximum length of 50 to 75 feet. Only a very slight slope on the bottom is necessary, and the water in the lowest part should be not over 12 to 15 inches in depth. In such a raceway it will be found that the fish will be scattered quite uniformly along its length, and there will be little danger of the majority collecting at one end.
