Book Description
A charmingly illustrated, alluring biography of the florid-and pocky-cheeked, intensely blue-eyed, chin-scarred, sandpaper-throated British actor who early on played romantic leads but quickly fell into more blustery character roles. The hell-raising, hard-drinking, outsized Howard of later years was born of a Lloyds of London underwriter of whom Howard saw little, and of a mother addicted to travel and globe-hopping and who thus exposed Howard and his sister Merla to such exotic places as Ceylon and Colorado. At a loss for a profession, Howard went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, found acting to be work that fit like a glove; and has remained a dedicated professional ever since. His first ten years were spent as a stage actor, playing Sheridan, Shaw, Shakespeare, and the moderns; his first film role was as a naval officer in The Way Ahead in 1944, for Carol Reed. He is best remembered for his brilliant first starring role as the romantically beleaguered married doctor in the evergreen classic Brief Encounter (1945). Howard's gifts have been squandered in dozens of feeble films, while some of his best work remains unsung. Childless, his marriage to Helen Cherry has lasted since they first played opposite each other onstage in 1943. He is a determinedly private eccentric (and ex-hell-raiser) who never talks shop offstage. A better than average movie bio.

Book Description
Ryan's Daughter, winner of two Oscars, was a very successful film that lured Michael Tanner to the Dingle Peninsula. He researched this story by focusing on identifying locations and interviewing local people involved in the film's shoot. The result is an unvarnished account of the troubled shooting of the film, both on and off camera, and how its stars - Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles, Trevor Howard, Christopher Jones and John Mills - coped with a year on Ireland's west coast in 1969. The story is largely told in the words of local people who were drivers, extras, prop men, landladies, actors or mere observers. Also included is a gazetteer to the locations used on the Dingle Peninsula and elsewhere in Kerry to enable fans to follow in Rosy Ryan's footsteps. With pictures and archive material, much never published before, this is the behind-the-scenes story of a film which changed the Dingle Peninsula overnight, saw more antics than usual by stars off and on set, and resulted in David Lean making no film for 14 years.

Book Description
Richard Harris was a giant who oozed charisma on screen; offscreen, however, he was troubled and addicted to every pleasure life could offer. Coming from a repressed Irish Catholic background, he was forced by a teenage illness to abandon his beloved rugby, but not his macho appetites. Discovering theater saved him. He had found his calling. Despite marrying the daughter of a peer, he never tried to fit in. He was always a hell-raiser to the core, along with legendary buddies Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole. But he was more; he was a gifted poet and singer. He was an intelligent family man who took great interest in his craft, and was a Renaissance man of the film world. Every time his excesses threatened to kill his career, and himself, he rose magnificently from the ashes, first with an Oscar-winning performance as Bull McCabe in The Field, then in the Harry Potter franchise.
