Functional Insulin Treatment
Author: Kinga Howorka
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642972985
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 159
Book Description
Functional Insulin Treatment (FIT) is the most effective method of treatmentfor type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes available today. Whether with an insulin pump or with mul- tiple daily injections, the diabetic patient trained in FIT is able to dose his insulin on the basis of actual fuction so that he achieves near-normoglycemia and the freedom to eat when, what and how much he wants. Previous diabetes eduction programs have adaped the patient's lifestyle to the conditions of therapy. The goal ofFIT is to adapt the therapy to the lifestyle of the pa- tient. Combined withthe opportunity for active and respon- sible patient participation, this flexibility has an enor- mous positive effect on the patient's long-term motivation. This book creates a common basis for communication among therapists (physicians, nurses, dietitians, diabetes educa- tors) and patients involved in FIT. It clearly defines the principles of the treatment and describes the contents, media and techniques of a practical program for training patients to carry it out. The reader is given a clear pictureof just what knowledge and skills the patient needs - and how to help him acquire them - in order to attain the twin goals of excellent metabolic control and flexible life- style.

Symposium on Diabetes Mellitus
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Diabetes
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Abstract: A reference text presents 14 technical papers from a 1982 symposium addressing the current status of knowledge and recent findings in a variety of areas of diabetes mellitus research, diagnosis, and management. These technical overviews cover the basic attributes of diabetes mellitus (classifications, etiologies) criticize the various diagnostic tests, and focus on specific therapies for diabetes management (e.g.: multiple subcutaneous insulin injections; portable insulin infusion devices; glycosylated hemoglobin). Diabetes management in various population groups (pregnant women; surgical patients; hypertensive patients; hyperlipidemic patients; patients having sexual dysfunction) is reviewed. Other papers discuss patient education for self-monitoring, blood-glucose self-monitoring; psychological reactions to insulin infusion pumps, and benefit-risk factors in the meticulous control of diabetes. (wz).

The Discovery of Insulin
Author: Michael Bliss
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487516746
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
The discovery of insulin at the University of Toronto in 1921-22 was one of the most dramatic events in the history of the treatment of disease. Insulin was a wonder-drug with ability to bring patients back from the very brink of death, and it was no surprise that in 1923 the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to its discoverers, the Canadian research team of Banting, Best, Collip, and Macleod. In this engaging and award-winning account, historian Michael Bliss recounts the fascinating story behind the discovery of insulin – a story as much filled with fiery confrontation and intense competition as medical dedication and scientific genius. Originally published in 1982 and updated in 1996, The Discovery of Insulin has won the City of Toronto Book Award, the Jason Hannah Medal of the Royal Society of Canada, and the William H. Welch Medal of the American Association for the History of Medicine.
