We can say then, and with pride and satisfaction we say it, that Michigan is the first of these United States to try the experiment of establishing a State Agricultural School and experimental and model farm, under government patronage. We hope and trust the experiment will prove an eminently successful one. It is true, the enterprise is one of vast importance, and by the people of the State, by the Legislature, and by yourselves it has been duly considered, and you have decided that in order to render the institution of the highest practical utility, it should be established upon its own basis, and entirely seperate from any other institution. But although you have arrived at this conclusion, it is right that you should examine the arguments of those who, after giving the subject some attention, "cannot believe" that in establishing an independent school "the best thing has been done." Not illustrated. 1852 edition. Excerpt: ...in England. In that county, it was calculated that one-fifth of the land was occupied by thorn hedges! The fields were small, generally from three to five acres. The hedges were in bad condition, and formed a nursery for all kinds of weeds. On many farms the interior fences are now thrown down and the hurdle fence introduced with the greatest success. It may be necessary to premise that it is not contemplated to run hurdles around all the lots where fences formerly existed, by any means. No fences are necessary for the separation of grain crops, but only around pasture allotments, or where cattle may be allowed temporarily to graze. Permanent, and if possible, live fences, such as thorn, should be run round the exterior of every farm, and these, were it only for good neighborh0od, ought to be kept to be constructed, enclosing door-yard, garden, orchard and bamyard, With regard to the farm, great division lines ought to be laid permanently down, as always m-em' 1, either for shelter or division. Now. it is evident that no division " required between these patches, and ll" at consequently a great saving of land is elfected, not to speak of the eradication of all kinds of weeds that would otherwise have grown, had fences been laid down.
