Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, 1913, Vol. 7 The differences between Scottish thought and habit and institutions and those in England only become intelligible when we try to trace their genesis and the interaction 2 Of one country upon the other has been an important factor in the modern history of both. Last year,3 and the year before,4 I directed your attention to some points of contrast between English and Scottish history - the late growth Of Scottish as compared with English nationality, and the long-continued importance Of the family as a unit in Scottish political life. But the contrast in the story of the northern and of the southern part of the island becomes still more striking when we concentrate attention on municipal history. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, Vol. 1 History and Geography, if we would study either thoroughly and intelligently, can never be completely dissevered. The continual influence exercised, from generation to generation, by climate, food, and necessary pursuits upon a people, com bined with the influences of the political geography Of the surrounding countries, the presence of strong or weak, civilised or barbarous neighbours, all these exercise the strongest pres sure upon the original character, and mould the course Of the history of every nation. And, therefore, to appreciate the full meaning of that history, a study of the theatre in which the action was played is of importance. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, Vol. 16: New Series In casting about for a subject on which to address you today I came to the conclusion that to speak on some abstract question connected with the study of history would at best be but a feeble repetition of What has been said before by my predecessors here, by professors in their inaugural lectures, and by many others in speech or in writing. Before an audience of this kind I need not defend the interest or the utility of our favourite study. You would hardly be here if you did not believe the study Of history to be useful, and if you did not generally find it interesting. I need not dwell on the fact that history is the mother, in more senses than one, of politics; and that, whatever else we should know as citizens, politicians, or administrators, we ought at least to know something Of the history Of our own country - how it came to be made - through what Changes it has recently passed - what have been its relations to other States down to our own day. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Royal Historical Society, Vol. 10 When I was reading for my degree at Oxford, I thought that the 'Politics' of Aristotle would be likely to interest me more than his 'Rhetoric, ' which was then usually taken into the Schools with the inevitable and sacramental 'Ethics.' Few people read it in those days, and my desire to take it up was treated rather as a harmless eccentricity, in the spirit of the words 'Tiens, tu aimes ton mari; c'est bizarre, pourtant ce n'est pas defendu.' This was in the year 1850, and I never returned to my old subject of study, after passing my examination, until, a few months ago, it occurred to me to read the book once again, and to see how it struck me after many years passed in politics and administration. When I turned my mind in that direction, I soon found that far from being neglected as it used to be, it had attracted a great deal of attention in the last six-and-forty years, and that many men of high ability had done their best to elucidate its teaching from many different points of view. The first who did so in England was, I think, Mr. Eaton of Merton, who became at a later period Professor of Moral Philosophy, and the author of the 'Permanence of Christianity.'
