AS the student passes from one class room to another he takes with him the results of the influence there felt, either as an inspiration to more strenuous effort or as a mental soporific that is placidly satisfied with the reach of present attainment. The years after graduation, too, are frequent reminders of this patient friend or that judicious counselor among the members of the Faculty of the Old college, to which memory like a pilgrim gray shall love to return and linger in life's twilight hours. To gain the highest success as a teacher in college, one must be in Close touch with the student body. He must be able to look at questions from the student's standpoint, to interpret correctly the Chan ging phases of the life of the college, and to endure the thousand natural shocks that (college) flesh is heir to. It is well, in these days especially, if he be an athlete; but that is not enough. It is highly desirable that he be a scholar, well equipped and well developed, thereby deserv ing and receiving the respect of every student; but even this is not enough. He must be a man and a student, desiring knowledge, intent in his search after truth, looking upon life in the college world with even more courage and hope than inspire the young hearts about him, and never for a moment losing faith in the ultimate supremacy of industry and righteousness and purity. Excerpt from Transactions for 1903 and General Index, 1857 to 1903 Perhaps the ideal macadamised road, if cleanliness, smooth ness and freedom from dust be considered, is one formed of tar macadam, a material used in many towns on account of its forming a comparatively noiseless road, impervious to wet and therefore easily cleansed. Unfortunately this material is not suitable for very heavy traffic and is more slippery than ordinary macadam; it would, however, form a surface on which cyclists and motorists could travel with great ease, but there is little probability of even a track being laid along our main roads for high speed traffic, seeing that the cost of replacing an ordinary macadamised surface with tar macadam would amount to from to 33. At Ale. 1 118, after Heracles, on the ground that he trusts Admetus's right hand alone (v. 1 1 has urged the latter to give his hand to the veiled woman (v. Admetus does stretch out his hand with the words: Kai 87) 7rpo rely a). The fact that this half verse occurs in a scene that we have found Sophocles imitating elsewhere, added to the fact that the scenic situation is a very striking one, makes it pretty certain that Trae/z. I 184 is a reminiscence of Ale. 1 118. It is to be noted that Sophocles substituted for Euripides's real, the synonymous It is possible that another Euripidean Situation in which the scenic business must have been decidedly good - viz. The scene where Medea makes Aegeus take oath - may have been likewise before sopho cles's mind in writing Trade. 1181 sqq. But it is not certain.
