Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, Vol. 20: Issued May 30th, 1884 We meet to-night to commemorate another session of the Royal Society of Victoria under somewhat new conditions. Hitherto our annual meeting has always been held in our own house, but the growth of the Society and the consequent increasing demands for admission to our yearly gathering has resulted in uncomfortably crowded rooms in the Royal Society building. The Council decided therefore to hold the meeting this year in more spacious premises, and chose this, the Melbourne Athenaeum, for the purpose. Since the annual gathering in September last our Society has entered on its twenty-fifth session. It has increased its member-roll considerably, and, aided by the annual grant from Parliament to help in printing our Transactions, the Society is also, financially speaking, in a satisfactory condition. Our meetings have been fully occupied with papers and discussions on scientific and technical subjects, and, on the whole, I believe I am justified in congratulating you upon a vigorous and healthy progress, and upon the useful work it has done. The ordinary income, added by the grant. Annually voted to us by the Parliament, now places us in a satisfactory position. The Society is not only solvent but it has a small reserve for current requirements. Our buildings are in good order and repair we haye added to our library accommodation, and had a large number of our valuable books bound, so as to be accessible to our members. The increase of the Society, and more especially the want of more space for our large meetings and gatherings like this, has already given rise to a wish for more accommodation in the shape of a large lecture or assembly room, and I' have no doubt the Council will take the matter cinto serious consideration before Our next session. Our last session was a busy one, as will be seen by reference to our twentieth volume, 1ssued in May last, and it is gratifying to note how promptly our secretaries have placed the volume for 1883 before our members.
