Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, 1874, Vol. 11 We meet together to-night to commemorate the l6th year of this Society's existence, and it becomes my duty, as your President, to address you brie y upon its past year's history and present position. On former occasions of this kind I have usually trespassed upon your attention by referring to some subjects of prominent scientific interest; with your permission, I will adopt the same course to - night, but as brie y as possible. First let me speak of the Society's business. I am happy to be able to deviate from the almost stereo typed statement that I have unfortunately felt compelled to make in previous addresses, concerning the non-publication of our Transactions; at last these are in course of printing, and in so forward a state as to be shortly ready for distribution. This volume (the loth) will contain the papers and other results of the Society' s labours from the year 1868 to the commencement of the present year. This result I must explain is mainly owing to the fact that the present Government has liberally renewed the grant in aid to the Royal Society which has been unfortunately withheld for several years past. It should be remembered that the only real objects of this Society are, the advance ment of knowledge in the colony, and the development of its manufactures, Industries, and resources and however inadequately it may fulfil these Objects, its efforts are stead fastly and earnestly directed to that end. Relying on these facts, we trust that the Government will for the future help our endeavours, at least as far as the publication of our Transactions is concerned. Before going to press with the accumulated proceedings of the past sessions, your Council appointed a printing com mittee to revise the papers and communications, and decide upon which to print in full, which in abstract, and which should be merely noticed in order by the Simple title for it was found that many of the papers having reference to matters of passing interest at the time of their reception, possessed no longer their original value, while many others were regarded as likely to be more valuable in abstract than in full. The committee had a somewhat invidious task to perform, but I believe it has done its work fairly, with due attention to the interests of the Society as a body, and with due consideration of the claims of the various authors. The Council has authorised the illustration of papers by litho graphs, photographs, and woodcuts, wherever the subjects have appeared to warrant that additional expenditure. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, 1897, Vol. 10: Part I.; Edited Under the Authority of the Council The intercalated bands at the quarry of sand and angular quartz gravel indicate that freshets occurred in the streams emptying into the lake in this region, and the fact that only isolated bones have been discovered suggests that the bones were brought down by streams to their final resting place. The very hard quartzites appear to have been formed by the action of silicious springs. The microscopic examination of the rock strongly confirms this view 3 in the slide rounded and sub angular grains of quartz are set in a matrix of extremely minute specks of quartz, which acts as a cementing material. The peripheral markings of some of the quartz-grains may possibly be explained on the supposition that there has been a growth of the quartz by its taking up some Of the Silica in solution. There is a good deal of black dust, probably magnetite, scattered through the slide, and it is quite possible that, to some slight extent, the grains are bound together by a ferruginous cement. A few highly refracting and brightly polarising grains visible in the slide indicate, in all probability, the presence of zircons. There is no trace of felspar among the grains. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions and Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria, Vol. 20: Issued May 30th, 1884 We meet to-night to commemorate another session of the Royal Society of Victoria under somewhat new conditions. Hitherto our annual meeting has always been held in our own house, but the growth of the Society and the consequent increasing demands for admission to our yearly gathering has resulted in uncomfortably crowded rooms in the Royal Society building. The Council decided therefore to hold the meeting this year in more spacious premises, and chose this, the Melbourne Athenaeum, for the purpose. Since the annual gathering in September last our Society has entered on its twenty-fifth session. It has increased its member-roll considerably, and, aided by the annual grant from Parliament to help in printing our Transactions, the Society is also, financially speaking, in a satisfactory condition. Our meetings have been fully occupied with papers and discussions on scientific and technical subjects, and, on the whole, I believe I am justified in congratulating you upon a vigorous and healthy progress, and upon the useful work it has done.
