Le roman Désert de J.M.G. Le Clézio est une des œuvres les plus marquantes de cet écrivain, le pénultième lauréat français du prix Nobel de littérature. Le but du mémoire était de vérifier, en rétrospective, dans quelle mesure les principes théoriques de la traduction étaient mis en pratique lors de la traduction d'une partie du roman. Dans la partie théorique, je présente très brièvement l'histoire de la traductologie en mettant en avant une œuvre orientée vers la pratique, La traduction aujourd'hui de Marianne Lederer. Un chapitre à part est consacré à J.M.G. Le Clézio et aux caractéristiques de son roman Désert. Les problèmes apparus lors de la traduction, divisés en trois groupes, sont présentes dans le chapitre analytique : les difficultés liées à la différence entre le système grammatical de la langue de départ et celui de la langue d'arrivée, les défis qui s'ensuivent de la spécificité de l'œuvre même et d'autres difficultés de traduction. Dans l'annexe figure la première partie de l'œuvre en langue source et en langue cible. Il s'est avéré que, lors de la traduction, j'avais utilisé, sans en être consciente, quelques procédés décrits dans la littérature. En plus, les réflexions théoriques se sont montrées très utiles lors de la transcription des noms propres. Ma conclusion principale serait la suivante : certes, le traducteur doit connaître la langue de départ, mais c'est la fluidité d'expression dans la langue maternelle qui aide davantage à obtenir une traduction réussie.
