Book Description
From birth, it was clear that Jeffrey was not a typical child. By age three he exhibited such severe behavioral problems he was considered a danger to other children. No daycare would take him, and doctors were more stymied than helpful about his extreme aggressiveness and compulsiveness. Threatened with institutionalization for her six-year-old son, Debbie Jeffries resorted to an unusual therapy: marijuana. A conservative Christian, she had no experience with the drug, but extensive research convinced her this might be her last hope. This book powerfully describes the desperate journey of a family toward a semblance of normalcy, including the court battle defending Jeffrey's right to this unconventional treatment, the family's exposure on "48 Hours, " and the threat to Jeffrey's ongoing care by federal raids on California's medical marijuana dispensaries. The book also features a special resource section, plus commentary by Michael Alcalay, the pediatrician who recommended and supervised Jeffrey's marijuana therapy; Valerie Corral, who helped design his marijuana regimen; and ethicist Peter S. Clark, Ph.D.

Book Description
In Dear Jeff: A Mother’s Reflections and Responses Throughout a Family Tragedy, Carmen Westberg shares the heartbreaking story of her son, Jeff, who received a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in a farming accident at the age of 14. The story, told through a series of letters she writes to him, begins just before the accident occurs and follows their family’s journey from the ICU forward. As Carmen comes to understand that Jeff’s life has changed forever and learns to navigate both the internal and external challenges that accompany his condition, she shares her reactions and emotions, memories of her upbringing, and the continuing history of her family. She finds a way to communicate with a son whose personality and capabilities have transformed in an instant, providing a window into a grieving mother’s mind and heart. Dear Jeff is not only the story of a family’s perseverance in the face of TBI but also a comfort for anyone facing a similar tragedy—especially mothers. Carmen’s letters show that feeling confused and overwrought in the midst of a painful journey is normal. She offers the perspective and experience that families may need when their worlds are upended by trauma . . . and she reassures them that they are not alone.

Book Description
During his early teens, Jeff Bratton started using drugs. At first, alcohol and pot, but quickly he spiraled into using cocaine, ketamine, crystal meth and eventually heroin. How could this wonderful son, loving brother, and star athlete lose himself to drugs? How could his parents be so clueless? How could his mother, the long-term head of a private school, be so blind? "Stagli vicino", an Italian recovering addict told the author. "Stay close—never leave him, even when he is most unlovable." This is not a book about saving a child. It is a book about what it means to stay close to a loved one gripped by addiction. It is about one son who came home and one mother who never gave up hope. Stay Close is one mother's tough, honest, and intimate tale that chronicles her son's severe drug addiction, as it corroded all relationships from the inside out. It is a story of deep trauma and deep despair, but also of deep hope—and healing. Here is Libby Cataldi's story about dealing with addiction without withdrawing love, learning to trust again while remaining attuned to lies, and the cautious triumph of staying clean one day at a time. He told her, "Mom, never quit believing." And she didn't.

Book Description
Jeff and Jimmy- A Vietnam Epistolary by R. C. Hamilton With the multitude of writings about Vietnam, most of which are now probably confined to the cobweb and the dustbin of forgottenness, we thought we have known the last of them. Yet, the story of Jeff Hamilton and Jim Ackerman weaves an irresistible aura about it, a stirring essence that defies all that we believe we already know about 'Nam. Jeff and Jim are town mates-from Mansfield, Ohio-who find themselves thrown in the same platoon at Vietnam, Jeff as the platoon leader, and Jim his radio operator. On a tour of duty on March 22, 1968, both will face invisible enemies who will force them to act in a way that will forever make their mark in the minds of those who know them. At first, what transpired on that day would appear to be as enigmatic to friends and families as the whole episode of Vietnam itself. The details, when they finally become known, appear to be as emblematic as to be what Vietnam is really all about. About the Author R.C. Hamilton worked for over thirty years in an academic library in western Pennsylvania. During that time, he and his wife and son lived on a family farm and raised Scottish Highland Cattle in a Minor Breeds conservancy program. He was also a multi-instrumentalist and performer in a Scottish/Irish Traditional folk music band, ARAN, was a distance runner and sometime triathlon participant. His work has appeared in the O. Henry Awards short stories anthologies, the Antioch Review, Confrontation Magazine, Tropic magazine, Country Journal, Running Times; he was a regular freelance contributor to Westsylvania magazine and numerous other publications. He has won the Golden Quill Award for nonfiction (sports category) and has twice won the Westmoreland Award for poetry, and also the same award for fiction. He is now retired. He and his wife live in Alamogordo, New Mexico, which has over 300 sun days each year, and where he continues to practice the Irish bouzouki, button accordion, penny whistle and guitar and still tries to improve his technique-which is a perpetual labor of love. This is his second published book of narrative nonfiction.

Book Description
"The book's title suggests the constantly shifting in-between-ness we all must live in-between life and death; between the self and the desire to forget the self; between the search for meaning and the acknowledgment that life may not make sense; between the beauty of the natural world and the ongoing sorrows of life; between the need to put something into words and the limitations of language"--
