Book Description
Excerpt from Thoroughfare Plan for the Town of Ayden, North Carolina, 1992 Oh September 6, 1989, the Town of Ayden formally requested an update of their thoroughfare plan. Due to the growth and development in the region and recent federal legislation regarding the environment, several of the proposed thoroughfares on the existing plan had become infeasible. Also, since the Town was working with the North Carolina Department of Economic and Community Development on an updated Land Use Plan, a review of the thoroughfare plan seemed appropriate. Book Description
Excerpt from Thoroughfare Plan for Vance County, North Carolina: September 10, 1997 The objective of thoroughfare planning is to enable the transportation network to be progressively developed to adequately meet the transportation needs of a community or region as land develops and traffic volumes increase. By not planning now for our future transportation needs, unnecessary costs to the physical, social, and economic environment may very well be incurred. Thoroughfare planning is a tool that can be used by local officials to plan for future transportation needs, while at the same time reducing the costs to our environment. The primary purpose of this report is to present the findings and recommendations of the thoroughfare plan study conducted for the Vance County. The secondary purpose of this report is to document the basic thoroughfare planning principles and procedures used in developing these recommendations. This report can be divided into three parts. The first part of the report, covered in Chapter 1, covers the highlights of the study. Chapter 2 and 3 provide a detailed description of the Thoroughfare Plan study recommendations and address different methods by which these recommendations can be implemented. The final chapter, Chapter 4, covers study procedures and findings. Information that will be especially useful to the practitioners is provided in the Appendix. The principles of thoroughfare planning are covered in Appendix A, a detailed tabulation of all routes on the Thoroughfare Plan and a graphical representation of typical cross-sections can be found in Appendix B and C respectively. Information related to subdivision ordinances is covered in Appendix D. Finally in Appendix E is an index for secondary road numbers for Vance County. Book Description
Excerpt from Thoroughfare Plan for Dare County, North Carolina The economic development of a region can be greatly influenced by how efficiently the transportation system handles travel demand. If the system fails to provide the means for quick and convenient transportation of people and goods, the region's economic growth becomes stagnated and fails to reach its potential. It is necessary that such a system not only meet existing travel demands, but also that it keep pace with the development of the region. This report will set forth a system of thoroughfares to satisfy the anticipated traffic and land development needs of Dare County for the next twenty years. In the development of the system of thoroughfares, certain priorities shall be established based on maintenance needs, inadequate bridges, poor horizontal and vertical alignment, and insufficient present and future capacity.
