Book Description
This paper describes the thermo-mechanical fatigue behavior of Al-Si-Cu-Mg casting alloy. The alloy is widely used for cylinder heads and pistons of automobile engines. Repeated cycling between driving and resting, or low-power and high-power driving cause thermal cycling in the engine materials. The thermo-mechanical fatigue property is therefore very important to develop high-performance engines. This study aims to characterize the cyclic stress-strain behavior of this alloy and to clarify the factors dominating the fracture life. Results obtained are : (1) The stress-strain behavior changes remarkably during thermal cycling. Cyclic hardening and cycling softening occur in the higher and lower strain ranges, respectively. (2) A thermo-mechanical fatigue fracture limit diagram is obtained by connecting fracture points on the inelastic strain range -- number of cycles relationship. (3) Consequently, in 103 - 104 cycles, it is considered that poor ductility and inelastic strain increase due to overaging dominate the thermo-mechanical fatigue life of the alloy.

Book Description
A review is made of the available information on thermomechanical processing of aluminum alloys, especially with respect to their fatigue behavior. An attempt is made to evaluate from the scarce and sometimes contradictory experimental evidence the possibility of improving the fatigue resistance of high-strength aluminum alloys by these treatments. To do so, it is also necessary to review the important microstructural features and deformation characteristics of these alloys, which seem to control the various stages of fatigue, and which may be influenced by the thermomechanical treatments. The discussion is limited to thermomechanical treatments subsequent to solution annealing. It is concluded that suitable processing offers the advantage of improving both strength and ductility in Al-Cu and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys. If the effects of inclusions can be minimized, significant benefits are possible in fatigue, at least in Stage I crack resistance, by thermomechanical processing.

Book Description
Casting Aluminum Alloys, Second Edition, the follow up to the fall 2007 work on the structure, properties, thermal resistance, corrosion and fatigue of aluminum alloys in industrial manufacturing, discusses findings from the past decade, including sections on new casting alloys, novel casting technologies, and new methods of alloys design. The book also includes other hot topics, such as the implementation of computational technologies for the calculation of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of alloys, the development of software for calculation of diffusion processes in aluminum alloys, computational modeling of solidification microstructure and texture evolution of multi-component aluminum materials. In addition to changes in computational predictive abilities, there is a review of novel casting aluminum alloy compositions and properties, as well as descriptions of new casting technologies and updates to coverage on the mechanical properties of aluminum casting alloys. - Presents a discussion of thermodynamic calculations used for assessing non-equilibrium solidifications of casting aluminum alloys - Expands coverage of mathematical models for alloy mechanical properties, helping facilitate the selection of the best prospective candidate for new alloy development - Contains a new section that describes the self-consistent evaluation of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of aluminum alloys

Book Description
This volume contains a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the International Conference on Temperature-Fatigue Interaction, held in Paris, May 29-31, 2001, organised by the Fatigue Committee of the Societé Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux (SF2M), under the auspices of the European Structural Integrity Society. The conference disseminated recent research results and promoting the interaction and collaboration amongst materials scientists, mechanical engineers and design engineers. Many engineering components and structures used in the automotive, aerospace, power generation and many other industries experience cyclic mechanical loads at high temperature or temperature transients causing thermally induced stresses. The increase of operating temperature and thermal mechanical loading trigger the interaction with time-dependent phenomena such as creep and environmental effects (oxidation, corrosion). A large number of metallic materials were investigated including aluminium alloys for the automotive industry, steels and cast iron for the automotive industry and materials forming, stainless steels for power plants, titanium, composites, intermetallic alloys and nickel base superalloys for aircraft industry, polymers. Important progress was observed in testing practice for high temperature behaviour, including environment and thermo-mechanical loading as well as in observation techniques. A large problem which was emphasized is to know precisely service loading cycles under non-isothermal conditions. This was considered critical for numerous thermal fatigue problems discussed in this conference.
