Book Description
Paul de Man is often associated with an era of âe~high theoryâe(tm), an era it is argued may now be coming to a close. This book, written by three leading contemporary scholars, includes both a transcript and facsimile print of a previously unpublished text by de Man of his handwritten notes for a lecture on Walter Benjamin. Challenging and relevant, this volume presents de Manâe(tm)s work as a critical resource for dealing with the most important questions of the twenty-first century and argues for the place of theory within it. The humanities are flooded with crises of globalism, capitalism and terrorism, contemporary narratives of financial collapse, viral annihilation, species extinction, environmental disaster and terrorist destruction. Cohen, Colebrook and Miller draw out the implications of these crises and their narratives and, reflecting on this work by de Man, explore the limits of political thinking, of historical retrieval and the ethics of archives and cultural memory.

Book Description
By interrogating the terms and concepts most central to the urgent task of examining cultural change as a process of dynamic transition, this volume approaches the question of transition from multiple perspectives. As a result, it demonstrates how entangled the highly politicized spheres of cultural production, scientific invention, and intellectual discourse are in the contemporary world. Critical Transitions is organized into five clusters of concepts - boundaries, organization, rupture, novelty, futurity - all examined by leading and emerging thinkers in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, spanning fields including geography, literary studies, cultural theory, philosophy, and politics.

Book Description
A collection of the world's most mind-boggling, thought-provoking and downright hilarious theories - by the co-host of the UK's most downloaded podcast No Such Thing As A Fish, Dan Schreiber Why are we here? Do ghosts exist? Will we ever travel back in time? Are we being visited by extraterrestrials? Will we ever talk to animals? Are we being told the truth? Are mysterious creatures roaming the Earth? And why, when you're in the shower, does the shower-curtain always billow in towards you? We don't know the answers to any of these questions (that includes the shower-curtain one, which is a mystery that has eluded scientists for decades, and which they are still trying to solve). But don't worry, no matter what questions you have, you can bet on the fact that there is someone (or something) out there, investigating it on your behalf - and this book collects their latest findings. From the Silicon Valley tech billionaires currently trying to work out whether or not the universe is one giant video game simulation; to the self-proclaimed community of Italian time-travellers who are trying to save the world from destruction; The Theory of Everything Else will act as a handbook for those who want to think differently.

Book Description
Every time you look in the mirror, you see what it was and never what is. Everything is related to time and in time we can only refer to the past and the present. The future does not exist in any real shape than metaphoric speaking. Time is carried out in the past with the speed of the present. We are all immortal, because we never really die in time and everything is reported at the Time. We fade away in the past because The Present is faster even than death. A future itself may not be for what not yet happened nor can exist. The future is the past, and how things are like this, it means that I as an entity in Time, live eternal, even if I dissipate in space. TIME, the youngest and the oldest of them all.

Book Description
What are the most radical transformations on the horizon of our world? Shining a light on the many possibilities of the future from multiple perspectives, this book explores how futures are imagined across the world. Bringing together over 18 prominent thinkers from a variety of disciplines, it examines the potential worlds of the future and how they will affect everything from our culture to our politics, from our bodies to our minds. As future eras remain cloaked in relative obscurity, they compel the invention of new techniques for navigating those realms of imagination and speculation. With deeply immersive entries that analyse captivating phenomena occurring in the world today in places such as Latin America and the Caribbean, this book brings novel theoretical interpretations of transpiring events and the horizons they reveal. It skilfully tethers inexhaustible abstract concepts like the infinite, the beyond, and the emergence of new knowledge systems to a comprehensible structure that allows the analyses of the speculated unknown, ultimately allowing insight on features of futurity. Filled with insights from experts in the domains of literature, philosophy, visual art, architecture, design, media studies, anthropology, and more, Futures Theory contemplates the new variables that will expand and distort such fields in irreversibly compelling ways, opening up a discussion of the steps toward a new atmosphere for thought itself in the epochs to come.

Book Description
Taking a panoramic view of Korea's dynamic literary production in the final decade of Japanese rule, When the Future Disappears locates the imprint of a new temporal sense in Korean modernism: the impression of time interrupted, with no promise of a future. As colonial subjects of an empire headed toward total war, Korean writers in this global fascist moment produced some of the most sophisticated writings of twentieth-century modernism. Yi T'aejun, Ch'oe Myongik, Im Hwa, So Insik, Ch'oe Chaeso, Pak T'aewon, Kim Namch'on, and O Changhwan, among other Korean writers, lived through a rare colonial history in which their vernacular language was first inducted into the modern, only to be shut out again through the violence of state power. The colonial suppression of Korean-language publications was an effort to mobilize toward war, and it forced Korean writers to face the loss of their letters and devise new, creative forms of expression. Their remarkable struggle reflects the stark foreclosure at the heart of the modern colonial experience. Straddling cultural, intellectual, and literary history, this book maps the different strategies, including abstraction, irony, paradox, and even silence, that Korean writers used to narrate life within the Japanese empire.
