Book Description
The "aim" is undoubtedly the most abstruse and scientific point connected with the practice of Archery; the most difficult to teach, yet the most necessary to be taught; upon which all successful practice depends, yet respecting which the most sublime ignorance generally prevails; the want of a due understanding of which is all but universal, yet without which understanding an impassable barrier is presented to the progressing a single step beyond the commonest mediocrity. Ignorance of this fundamental principle it is that causes so many Archers endowed with every quality required to make great and accurate shots - health, strength, correctness of eye, &c. - to stand still, as it were, at a certain point, immoveable, and, if I may coin a word, unimproveable - year after year hammering away in the despairing pursuit of bulls' eyes, without any perceptible improvement or increase of skill, until at last, ... the whole matter has been given up in sheer hopelessness and disgust at continued ill-success.

Book Description
A Complete Recreation of the Deadliest Medieval Arm Dominating medieval battlefields for more than two centuries but requiring long and arduous practice to command, the English war bow and its battle shaft are the symbols of the rise of British power in Europe. Despite being crafted for hundreds of years and wielded by generations of archers, no example of the war bow--the military version of the longbow--exists, outside of a single broken limb. Now for the first time, expert craftsmen use all available evidence including applied archaeology to unlock the secrets of the English war bow. Historian Hugh D. H. Soar is joined by Mark Stretton, master blacksmith, and Joseph Gibbs, bowyer, in order to demonstrate how a war bow and its associated arrow heads and shafts may have been constructed and used. In addition to showing the complete manufacture of a bow from tree selection to stringing and how specialized arrowheads were forged and attached to shafts, Secrets of the English War Bow provides information on the actual performance of the war bow, including the bow's effectiveness against various materials and, for the first time, its use against moving targets, since bows were often drawn against mounted soldiers. Armed with this new information, Soar provides an analysis of both successes and failures of the war bow in several important battles. Illustrated in color and black and white, Secrets of the English War Bow provides an invaluable service for those interested in medieval military history, archery, and technology.

Book Description
This report of the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals presents national criminal justice standards and goals for crime reduction and prevention at the State and local levels. The Commission proposes as a goal for America a 50 percent reduction in high-fear crimes by 1983. It further proposes that crime-reduction efforts focus on five crimes: homicide, reduced by at least 25 percent by 1983; forcible rape, reduced by at least 25 percent by 1983; aggravated assault, reduced by at least 25 percent by 1983; robbery, reduced by at least 50 percent by 1983; and burglary, reduced by at least 50 percent by 1983. The Commission proposes four areas for priority action in reducing the five target crimes: juvenile delinquency, delivery of social services, prompt determination of guilt or innocence, and citizen action. There are seven areas where the Commission proposes recommendations. In the area of criminal justice, it proposes broad reforms and improvements at the State and local levels. In focusing on community crime prevention, the Commission emphasizes communitywide crime prevention efforts at the State and local levels. The Commission also proposes that the delivery of police services be greatly improved at the municipal level and that the courts undergo a major restructuring and streamlining of procedures and practices in the processing of criminal cases at the State and local levels. Other proposals are in the broad areas of corrections and criminal code reform and revision. Regarding handguns in American society, the Commission proposes nationwide action at the State level to eliminate the dangers posed by widespread possession of handguns.

Book Description
Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.
