The American Way of Strategy
Author: Michael Lind
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195341414
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
In The American Way of Strategy, Lind argues that the goal of U.S. foreign policy has always been the preservation of the American way of life--embodied in civilian government, checks and balances, a commercial economy, and individual freedom. Lind describes how successive American statesmen--from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton to Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan--have pursued an American way of strategy that minimizes the dangers of empire and anarchy by two means: liberal internationalism and realism. At its best, the American way of strategy is a well-thought-out and practical guide designed to preserve a peaceful and demilitarized world by preventing an international system dominated by imperial and militarist states and its disruption by anarchy. When American leaders have followed this path, they have led our nation from success to success, and when they have deviated from it, the results have been disastrous. Framed in an engaging historical narrative, the book makes an important contribution to contemporary debates. The American Way of Strategy is certain to change the way that Americans understand U.S. foreign policy.

Prejudential
Author: Margaret Kimberley
Publisher: Steerforth Press / Truth to Power
ISBN: 1586422480
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
“This book is an effort to shed light on the truth. . . . To the extent that our leaders embody aspects of who we are as a people, studying how each president has participated in our nation’s complicated and often shameful treatment of Black people is as good a place as any to start.” — Margaret Kimberley from the Preface "Margaret Kimberley gives us an intellectual gem of prophetic fire about all the U.S. presidents and their deep roots in the vicious legacy of white supremacy and predatory capitalism. Such truths seem more than most Americans can bear, though we ignore her words at our own peril!" — Cornel West, author of Race Matters PREJUDENTIAL is a concise, authoritative exploration of America’s relationship with race and Black Americans through the lens of the presidents who have been elected to represent all of its people. Throughout the history of the United States, numerous presidents have left their legacies as slaveholders, bigots, and inciters of racial violence, but were the ones generally regarded as more sympathetic to the plight and interests of Black Americans—such as Lincoln, FDR, and Clinton—really much better? And what of all the presidents whose relationship with Black America is not even considered in the pages of most history books? Over the course of 45 chapters—one for each president—Margaret Kimberley enlightens and informs readers about the attitudes and actions of the highest elected official in the country. By casting sunlight on an aspect of American history that is largely overlooked, Prejudential aims to increase awareness in a manner that will facilitate discussion and understanding.

Publisher: Izzard Ink
ISBN: 1642280925
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1078
Book Description
The Federalist is a collection of articles written in 1787–1788 by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay to defend and explain the U.S. Constitution. It is considered the most authoritative clarification of the Constitution ever put to print, save the Constitution itself. The Federalist Papers Made Easier is the first edition to separate all eighty-five papers into short individual segments for closer analysis and clarity. To make the lengthy essays easier for modern Americans to understand, every improvement has been made short of rewriting the text itself: Lengthy paragraphs are subdivided with descriptive headlines and summaries Key phrases are underlined Larger text in two columns All paragraphs are conveniently numbered Archaic words are defined Obscure references are footnoted Review questions at the end of each paper highlight important points An extensive index directs readers to specific paragraphs rather than page numbers An appendix includes answers to quiz questions; the AntiFederalists’ thirty-five main objections to the Constitution; and the texts of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the U.S. Constitution. The Federalist is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand and perpetuate the timeless principles of constitutional liberty into the next generation.
